I lost my spare key...
« on: August 12, 2016, 10:28:13 AM »
and I have a couple questions.  I see that Harper's offers a key blank.  Can most any locksmith make me a key from the one I have left?   I also lost my spare HB side luggage key.  Is there a source for another one of those?

You've got to be more specific.  I had no problem getting spare keys made for my '13 and '16 V7's.  The local locksmith even carries blanks.  Other MG models have, I believe, more exotic keys that are more difficult to replace.

The USA H&B distributor, Moto Machines, can supply keys for H&B cases.

Any good locksmith should be able to do it.  I had a blank cut for the Quota, and they found a Fiat blank that worked for the V65.  I bought a HB bag that didn't have a key.  I removed the cylinder and the locksmith was able to cut a key without any problems.

I once bought some blanks off of eBay for an EV and my locksmith wouldn't cut them because of the steel alloy they were made from.  It was too hard on his cutters.  The H&B keys are numbered and pre-cut when purchased.  I've also gotten them via Moto Machines as someone had mentioned.

I was surprised at the odd crossovers when dealing with my locksmith friend.  Various Italian bikes shared blanks (which seemed reasonable) but also, a number of Triumphs and other makes used the same blanks...?

I've gone to my local key shop and had two copies of my '98 EV ignition and two copies of my HB bags keys made.

They had both sets of key blanks in stock.

My LeMans III uses a Fiat key blank (for the spare).  We have a really good locksmith here in town.  As a matter of fact, he just made a spare key for my BMW R1100RT out of a Volvo blank.  Works for me.

I have a locksmith in St. Louis that even cut a key for an ambassador!  He only had one blank but could order more.  I took him a picture from eBay ad of the luggage key (70's Wixom bags) and he had a couple in stock!  You might have to go to several places, but don't buy key blanks first.
It is important to get spares while you still have a key to copy!

I went to a locksmith for a spare for my V7 Stone and had all the clerks stumped until the owner showed up and he figured it out using a Volvo blank. When he asked what the hell was the key for I said Italian motorcycle and he said that figures.

I'll second what Vince said. A Fiat blank works. I have had them cut and purchased from the local hardware store. IIRC, the new key is a tad longer, but that matters not as long as the ridges are right. Check out the tips and tricks page here at WG. I believe they list the blanks there.

As for your H-B keys. You should have a number on the key. Moto Machines is the H-B importer. They could probably set you up with the proper key(s) already cut for your bags.

Thanks all!  A blank is ordered (just in case), and I'll use the info. given to get one for the HB luggage.
