Replacement clutch lever for 850t
« on: September 08, 2016, 04:17:36 PM »
I just ordered the 12 mm master cylinder with the squre resevoir and japanese switches from mgcycle. I need a clutch lever with a black dogleg to match the new brake lever. I am having trouble finding anything that will work on an 850t. Are there any levers that I can modify to work on my 850t. This is my first Moto Guzzi and I apprecite the help. Thanks

Hey, first post for a new Guzzista! Please allow me to be the first to extend the slightly worn hand of welcome, and to congratulate you on your choice of model.

As for your question, somebody who knows what they're talking about will be along shortly.

That's the combustion chamber of the turbo shaft. It is supposed to be on fire. You just don't usually see it but the case and fairing fell off.

And how about some pics of the Norton... and um, the Guzzi?

I've got a Magura clutch lever but I have no idea if it's stock.

MG Cycle didn't have a matching clutch?

Swooshdave, youve seen my Norton on the accessnorton for sale page. Its ironic that you have a proddy racer and an 850t also. And I dream of living in Portland. Like a brother from another mother. I picked this Guzzi up as a cheap, running project to ride as the Norton is in limbo at the moment. And ive always dug vintage Guzzis. Mg cycle didnt have a clutch lever as its my understanding that the 850t has a unique clutch cable end at the lever. Does your magura lever take a standard 850t clutch cable? Heres a pic of the Norton and the new to me Guzzi.

Well, I am adopted so there is a chance you might be right!  :cheesy:

I don't know if my clutch lever and cable are stock. Luckily the PO was very smart and had a spare cable. I keep that tucked in one of the side covers.

Not to worry, these WildGuzzi folks are pretty sharp and will be able to help you. And they are pretty tolerant, so far they haven't kicked me off, although I wouldn't be surprised if there weren't closed door discussions about it.

I'll take some pics of my clutch lever tonight and post them.

I replaced my clutch lever assembly with this one.

from MG Cycles:
http://www.mgcycle.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=38&products_id=969&zenid=e71d7cfdfdaf42fb489e7729682be259

There are other sources also.

The inner clutch cable retaining indentation in the  clutch lever was enlarged  to fit my standard Guzzi 30 year old T4 clutch cables.
Would have been better off ordering a new clutch cable with a (new) correct end as the same time.
Beware some come with out a mirror perch. So be careful with that.

Much easier to use now I don't need to reach for the lever and have the option of having a remote choke on the handlebar  if I want. And I went down the Swooshdave route and have a new Brembo master cylinder on the other side so they match.

From below.

Not sure if this is stock or how modified it might be.

That looks like a stock 850t cable to me. Maybe the lever was modified a bit? I can handle a small mod if need be. Might look for one of those magura levers. Thanks for the pictures and help.

Check out the link to the Domino from Bevelheaven. Steve is an awesome person to order from, if you choose.

I bought this http://www.stein-dinse.biz/Moto-Guzzi/Handlebar-Instruments/Clutch-lever/Clutch-control-complete::225.html to match the new 12mm Brembo brake M/C http://www.mgcycle.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=110_112&products_id=1037 on my 850T.  Unfortunately, the M/C came with a black handle only.  I was able to find a matching silver replacement handle for the brake M/C http://www.mgcycle.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=38&products_id=1212  Another plus is that both handles in this set-up have cam adjusters.

I am not saying that this clutch control is compatible with the stock clutch cable.  It is likely a custom solution will be necessary for that end of the cable.  Haven't gotten there yet.  Personally, I'm comfortable making cables.

I broke my 30 year old clutch cable right after the post. Felt bloody stupid paddling along like a duck till I had enough speed to slip into first.

I must not mention the how old stuff that that I use.
