New levers..
« on: September 22, 2016, 11:56:59 AM »
Well, I broke the tip off of my right brake lever (I don't wanna talk about it ) so I ordered some cheap $20 adjustable replacements on Amazon.  Functionally I like them and they fit great and work fine.  I was going to get silver but they were out of stock, so instead of getting $75 OEM replacements I opted to get red.  A bit flashy for my tastes so I may go back and try again for gold or silver, but I was glad there were cheap options available.
They are more anodized metallic looking IRL than in the picture.

I put a set of those in grey on my silver Norge. They work just fine, and look good too. Don't forget to replace the pins that provide their axles, as the pins wear just like the levers do.

I have to find the link, but bought a pair of black folding Pazzo levers a few years ago that I have really liked.  Given that they have a hinge in them makes it easier not to break in case they get leaned on or the bike decides to snooze on its side.

I have no idea where they are made, but I suspect China.  The company is MotorStar

Thanks for the advice on the pins, I didn't think to look to see if those were aluminum.  Sounds like a trip to my local hardware store for stainless replacements is in order.

Been looking for some new levers for my B1100 just like these.  Seems like ebay is higher this time around than what you found them for.

Can you post the link to the Amazon page please?

You likely won't find them even at a specialty hardware store - they are a very long shank of thick material before the smaller threaded portion begins, and I could only find them as a motorcycle part. Since they are all part of the assembly provided by Brembo, you can check BMW and other dealers as well as the usual Guzzi sources. I believe they are made of steel, but somewhat mild steel. They don't wear as fast as the lever's hole that surrounds them, but they gradually go oval and add to the slop and play in the lever's movement.

MG's part number for these on the Norge is AP8113995 (brake side) and GU03604845 (clutch side) - both are referred to as a 'lever pin'. They may or may not come with the locknut, but those are easier to find.

By the way...what's the button there for...a heated seat or heated gear perhaps?  Looks like some wiring running to the back near the seat is governed by this switch?

Thanks!

The switch is a waterproof switch to control the aux lights.  It is connected to a relay where I can choose whether the driving lights are off, on with the high beams or on with the low beams.  The wire you see is just a USB cord coming from the power socket under the seat.

Well that was easy LOL.  Found them and thanks.

BTW, I like the red and that's probably what I'm going to order.  A little color on an all black bike is a good thing IMO.

Ha ha!!  Zombie...that's good IT, I remember that now from seeing your bike in John Day...cool stuff.

I'm hoping to find something that has a nice little muted illumination at night...will get to search now.

The bar below the text is lit at all times, and the light behind the biohazard symbol is on when the switch is set to 'on'. This particular switch is a simple one, but a three position one is also available with various legends. See Amazon, company I bought from is called "E Support" (fulfillment by Amazon, eligible for Prime for some products). Others have similar stuff, likely all from the same Chinese manufacturing sources of course.

Thanks IT...do I need a 2 pin or 3 pin switch for the driving lights?  As I'll have to cut the existing On/Off switch, want to make sure I buy the correct new switch...found some good ones on Amazon...

If the switch is lit, it will actually have 5 to seven pins, and either two or three rocker positions. If you just want on-off, then the simple two-position rocker will do the job. You can use a relay in combination with that if you just want to tie it in to be on with the high beams. If you want to do something fancier, such as atavar described, then you likely want a three-position rocker, and you'll need to do a bit more fancy wiring and relay work. Not too difficult, but a bit more work.

The five-pin two position rocker has the extra pins for the feed and ground for the switch's internal lights, and with the three-position rocker they add one or two pins for the additional alternative 'on' circuit.

Make sure the switch you get is waterproof.  What I did was make wye pigtails to fit the spade connectors to the high and low bulb on one side, that way I didn't have to cut any wires.  Think of two pieces of wire crimped in to one male spade and female spades crimped on the other wire ends.  One female spade to the bulb and one female spade to a selector terminal on the switch.
Then I wired from the common center of the switch to the control terminal on the relay and ran a fused line from the battery through the contacts on the relay to the aux lights.  That way I could select either the high beam or the low beam to be the control signal for the relay.
Use the second half of the switch to light the indicators if desired

Thanks for the great advice Atavar and IT.  Ordered some switches last night from Amazon (seem to be waterproof, but will double check), hopefully the connection process will be straightforward and cutting into the plastic to get a nicely seated switch will be easy enough.

I'm only looking for a standard On/Off - not linked in anyway to low beams or high beams...will make it easier for me to do the wiring that way.

I do like the idea of having a few of these switches for future items I might install, so I ordered 3 switches (red/blue/amber) in case some other accessories need to be added at a future date.

I do strongly recommend using the switch to control a relay that gets fused power from the battery.  The lights will be brighter than if you use power from a shared wire. The cost is minimal and you get some added safety.
One other benefit to using the headlamps to energize the relay is that when you shut the bike off the aux lights go out too and they are not on during engine start. They are easy to forget on a sunny day and leave you with a dead battery when you get out of the store you were shopping at.

Agreed...it has the relay and is all properly wired in with automatic shut off when the ignition is off, it's just the On / Off button is a dangly floppy one zip tied into my other wires (it's the original one from the light manufacturer) and has a counter intuitive lighting where Green light is off, and Yellow light is on...so I'm just looking to cut that end off, and re-attach the wires to a more sturdily mounted switch like yours/IT's on the hard plastic.

Thanks again both!
