Thought the rings went, lost compression into the crankcase, was blowing oil out the vent. Turns out was just a bad head gasket. Everything else looks like new.

Was it leaking oil to the outside before loosing compression? It was more common on the 650 than the 500 specially if it wasn't re-torqued at the 1st service.
It looks like it's the newer style gasket also.

Didn't look like any oil was leaking past the head gasket. I don't believe that my brother had the heads off when we drug the bike out of the shed it was in. That would be the only time the heads would have been off as far as I know.

Although now that I think about it. I do have a very slight oil spot around the right cylinder head gasket. Will be replacing that one too.

Best thing about dad being retired. He took my bike apart while I was at work and he put my bike back together while I was at work.  :thumb:

Sounds like you owe him a few beers. My dad was retired the 1st year I farmed, said the planter was always fine when he'd been running it for his dad. I counted the population and it was too heavy, so, I rebuilt it after 30yrs. Was fine then.

I have literally never dismantled and reassembled an engine as easy as the V65. It's a ten minute teardown on the top end, not much more going back together. Easier than a lot of old 2 strokes. All I did was buff the glaze off the cylinder walls with some fine steel wool. Magnificent piece of engineering, from what I see.
