New prices aren't that bad.  There are some used ones out there for sale.

You can find a nice CM400A for around $1200, there won't be any CTXs in that price range for quite some time. Plus, Groover's wife likes the cafe' style, not the "alien/insect" style.

As bad as the motorcycle market is (for sellers), there are some left over Hondas being sold at a huge discount.

Some of the early husquvarna's from dim dark distant memory were automatic or at least had a centrifugal clutch. You can also get a recluse clutch for just about any modern dirt bike/super moto you can think of. This is basically a centrifugal clutch conversion you still have to shift manually but it eliminates the clutch lever they also include a slipper function, most of the enduro bikes also have electric leg too. There also also people building brats etc out of the venerable CT110/postie bike again manual shift with centrifugal clutch.

Thanks Tom. Yes, all is well! We discussed it more in detail today (using lots of photos) before pulling the trigger on an '81 cm400a, and though it would be a fun project, it will be ridden very little as she would still prefer to just ride two-up with me in the end. I guess honest communication saved me some cash and lots of time on this project. She has a Vespa and rides it once in blue moon, and this would likely be the same.
