Recent engine surging on 2012 V7
« on: October 19, 2016, 08:28:39 AM »
Have a 2012 V7 Classic with ~9400 miles on it, and until this past weekend, bike has been 100% maintenance and trouble free. I headed out early Sat. morning for an all day ride and it was about 35 degrees Fahrenheit and I noticed when I held the throttle around 4k, the engine started surging. I topped up gas thinking maybe had some bad gas, but problem persisted. A co-rider had mentioned possible problem with the TPS unit. Once it warmed up however, problem went away and bike was rock solid again for the remainder of the day which leads me to believe something related to the cold? Any thoughts as to what may have happened?

"held the throttle at 4000" ???

were you stationary and revving the cold engine to 4000 ?

how long into the ride before the engine was "warm" and the surge went away ?

Not stationary, rolling along with tach around ~4k RPM. Engine was sufficiently warmed up before problem initially started. Problem appeared to go away more of a result of ambient temp increasing than engine temp.

"100% maintenance and trouble free"...hopefully some maintenance has occurred in 9400 miles?
What is the status of the scheduled maintenance?

The ECU and fuel injection system relies on a number of sensors.  The intake air temp sensor is one of them.  If you have not yet ridden at those temps the ECU has to create the mapping to go along with the cold. Beside that 4,000 rpm on the V7's is right around the speed that the EPA tests the vehicle.
I you know if the latest map has been installed?  If not that may help.

All maintenance has been performed to date, just meant "no issues or problems". This was most likely the coldest temp I had ridden this bike in so perhaps the ECU was the issue.

Waltr: When you say the ECU has to create the mapping to go along with the cold, is that something that the computer does on it's own based on environment, or is it something that needs to be done manually?

The ECU does this automatically.

Here's a related thread for your reference - http://wildguzzi.com/forum/index.php?topic=79530.0

While not the exact same issue, Rocker's reply (#23 in the thread) may be helpful to you.

If memory serves, it was our esteemed Mr. Roper that originally suggested the 15 minute idle procedure to let the ECU do it's learnin'.

My anal-retentiveness is forcing me to be pedantic.

I believe the MAP is a fixed table of values - if this temperature and that pressure, and that throttle position, use this much fuel etc.

What I believe Walt is talking about are the adaptive/learning tables, whereby with feedback on the efficiency of combustion via the O2 sensors, the ECM develops a correction factor to be used.

ECU refresh and update on my 2012 V7R by MPH here in Houston fixed a lot of issues.  Long cold idle went away, so did restart when engine really hot and parked in sun.  Overall performance smooth as silk at 15000 miles.
