Is there a sadistic dentist in the house?
« on: December 06, 2016, 09:45:41 PM »
. ... or someone who can identify what appear to be Byzantium dental instruments?

item the First:

The "handle is a hex cross-section 1.25".  The straight, slotted ear is an extension of the solid steel arm.  The curved, slotted ear is fixed with a bolt and swings freely.  The swinging bit is offset to be on the same plane as the fixed slotted bit.  You can see the length.  It is very heavy.

Item the Second:

Overall length (- the thumbscrew on the end) is 15".  The thumbscrew locks the post with the flag at a user-set length.  That's a bubble level in the center of the bar.  The big screw post is also set at some user-determined length with a thumbscrew.  The knob on the end of the screw post is a vernier adjustment for a smaller screw post that runs through the big screw post and attaches to those gear puller-looking jaws.   The post assembly is on a swivel (gimbal).  There is a spring between the bar and the screw post's jack nut.  The jaws are adjusted with the double-ended screw that is halfway down the jaw shanks.  The screw is reverse threaded on one side.  The foot on the bar is slotted for a screw or stud mount.  There is a 4" drop to the "foot" of the bar.  the foot is slotted for mounting to a bolt or stud.

SOooooo . . . . . what are we looking at?  I think they're for seating the dentures of whiny commercial jet pilots.  Ken sez they are involved with goats rented by the hour. Discuss!

Better to try a HD or BMW board for a dentist.

The second one might be a modern replacement for the dark ages pear of anguish, or maybe a gynecological instrument.  I suppose a Steve Martin like tooth fairy could find a use for it.

I have no idea what the second item is but it looks like a large clock hand puller. I would guess the level would be used to ensure that the hands are pulled of squarely so the shaft does not get bent. If they came from the same source and my guess about the second item is correct the first item may be related to the same field. Think oversize adjustable pin wrench where you would screw pins of the correct diameter into the slots. Or it may simply be a wigwam for a gooses bridle. You may have to look that up on google.

I've been a dentist since 1981, an orthodontist since 1983 and neither are recognizable as dental implements.

I am pretty sure the second is generally used for pulling passengers into flighty conversations rather than pulling aviator's teeth. Not sure about the first but it might be part of an early 16th century left-handed Spirograph set.

Item the First:
Looks automotive to me. I'm just guessing here - but could it be an arm to mount a car generator? The free arm with curved slot would be useful when tensioning the drive belt.

Item the Second:
Method and apparatus for calculating the angle of the dangle. Patent Pending.

With our wide-ranging membership I really thought someone would know what these are.

#2 is a puller but with extras I am not familiar with. Does it have a sliding hammer on the left at the end of the rod that is not shown? Item #1 I don't have a clue.

If you tap or click on the picture it will enlarge and you can see the entire object. There is no slide hammer or other impact device on the instrument.
