A friend is looking at a 2012 Norge... Roller issues ...?
« on: October 21, 2016, 06:42:17 PM »

I received a note from a friend in NH looking at a 2012 Norge, wicked low miles, good price.  He is asking if there are any known issues with them...

I dunno me says... I'll ask the collective.

So, were the 2012 model year Norges in the mix for rollerization..?  Probably dependent on serial number, no...?

Thanks for any assistance here.

Best,
Rob

Change to rollers happened 'sometime' in 2012. You can't rely on the serial number for confirmation, unfortunately. The only way to be sure is to pop the valve cover.

My 2012 Stelvio is a June build and came with factory rollers. I couldn't be sure until I took off the valve cover. Like Beetle says, you have to remove a valve cover to be sure. It's a great engine. If it does have flat tappets and low miles it's a good candidate for roller conversion. That costs about $1500, not sure, others will chime in with specifics. If it has tappets you can probably talk the seller down.

There was a recall for the suspension link connected to the bottom of the rear shock. Have your friend ask if that's been done.

I'd much rather ask for forgiveness than ask for permission.

Thanks beetle, Demar,
I did not know about the suspension recall for some reason...  and I passed on the link as well as the advise regarding actually Looking at the rollerization under the covers.

He is also looking at an '08 four valve as well as a 2012 eight valve...

Appreciate the input.

Rob

The '08 may have the oil pump problem so be aware of that.

Oh yeah, I had forgotten about that.  Was that not the early '07, maybe even late '06 build version..?   Bill Hagan was the first of those that I recall, a real trial blazer that Bill...

And just to be clear to the best of my knowledge all of the 8V Norges produced with flat tappets are late enough to require only the 'A' kit for conversion. This is one of the simpler kits which does not require head removal. Yes, with the Norge you have to take all the plastic off to do it but at least removing the plastic isn't a huge embuggerance like it is on the 2V models.

No reason to pass on the 8V if it's stupid low miles and a Flattie, just accept that it's going to have to go to a dealer @ around 10,000 miles/15,000km for inspection and rollerisation. Make your like easy by ensuring its service history is complete.

That's like saying someone was a trailblazer for the Bataan Death March!

Careful, these memories tend to get me to post that iconic-to-me pic of my Norge at MPH sans tupperware and ... erm ... and engine, etc.  :undecided:

Darn, tho, I do love that sweet beast.

Most of us who own the early "embuggerance" versions have become fairly skilled at work-arounds and fixes for that POS design.

I do wonder now and then if there are any early Norges out there with "original" fastening points not reinforced with JB Weld or other fixes.

Ok, copy all, the 8V have under 5K miles at this time.  I have encouraged the buyer to ask for the service history, there is a long time dealer in the area so I think they will be good for swapping to the "A" kit.

He might even walk into the selling dealer, which is not strictly a Guzzi business sounding as if he knows what he is talking about...  and be able to negotiate a good price.

Thanks,
Rob

Very  unlikely. I used to keep very close track of these and the oldest one I was ever able to confirm was May 07 build date almost all of them were late 06. I wouldn't worry 10 seconds about that with an 08 model. As for the fairing mounting points my 55k mile 07 has never had them repaired or reinforced in any way. One of them is basically broken but it doesn't matter the fairing stays perfectly well in place.
