Interesting,

Thanks for the info!

I called the number, but I'm getting a "nobody is available to take you call" message, and I send a text too with no response. I purchased the identical bike for my stable about two month ago, and this one would make possibly a great resurrection or parts bike? Lets wait and see if I hear back from whomever is selling this ride, that is "If she actually exists"?. I also have friends in Binghamton, so they could check the MG out for me to make sure that this is not a CL scam! I think that $2.8k is a little much for a bike that is not in running condition. I also don't know the milage or if all parts are still there in order to get her back to original? Lets wait and see.

So I did hear back from the seller, and the bike, not surprisingly, is still for sale. He purchased this bike completely dis-assembled a couple of years ago from the previous owner. He thinks that he is the second owner, and he stated that the bike apparently had been laid down onto her right side, which damaged the exhaust, handlebar, and scratched the rear fiberglass around the passenger seat. I assume that the frond wheel was also damaged, since it is a Kawasaki rim. In addition, all locks have been drilled out for whatever reason by the last owner. I'm also assuming that some other parts, like the turn-signals, mirrors, and the handlebar's throttle assembly on the right side are also scratched up or damaged. The voltage regulator is not working, so the alternator is not charging the battery. The front clip comes with the bike, but also has some scratches on it. The rear seat is missing, and the last owner apparently attempted to spray-paint the engine in black.

The owner stated that the bike runs great as long as the battery has a charge, so I can take her for a ride to make sure that the engine, transmission, and the clutch work as they should, if I decide to drive up to NY to buy this bike.

So, here is the question........

Assuming that I would buy this bike, worst case scenario, as a parts bike for my 97 Sport, what would this bike be worth with a clean title and a 18k mile drivetrain in assumed good running condition? I also have to consider that I need to drive almost 1200 miles to get this bike home from NY. I will need to make a decision by tomorrow, since I would need to leave here on Sunday to pick this ride up in NY on Monday.

Thanks for any feedback is appreciated!

Andy

Injected bikes need a full battery and charging system to fire the injectors.
Preferred my carb'd Sport but cheap is cheap and so long as you're not looking at running up a war debt it might be a good project.

FWIW, Mark Etheridge had a similar bike that he had $1600 in. I asked him if he was going to fix it and get it going. He said, "Are you kidding me? The only way to get my money out of it is to part it out."
So.. It's worth what you are willing to pay for it. Since all the locks have been drilled out, I *assume* you've run the VIN?
I'd pay what I thought the parts are worth.

I'd say $3500-$4500. Other Sport guys may have a more accurate price range.

The owner just send me some pictures of his bike, and I told him that I would be a buyer at $1k, but not any more. This bike is in bad shape! Virtually every part would need to be restored, many parts are missing, and I'm sure that the engine, transmission, and clutch would also need some work. I thought it was interesting when I saw where the trip-odometer's milage stopped when the bike had run last, especially since it would had been on Halloween Monday when I was planning on getting this bike home!

Some things are better left alone, this bike will be checked off as one of those things in my life!

The Sport 1100's are wonderfull Guzzi's, I've owned three, a carb and two injected models. The unfortunate, (or fortunate) thing, is that they have yet to attain their true value. As noted, you can buy a perfectly nice, clean titled, and well sorted version for 3-5 grand. All of mine were sold in this range over the last 15 years.  This one, sadly, needs about that much $$ to bring it back, and it will still have a salvage title.

At some point in the future, I think their competence, and rarity will catch up to the MC marketplace, and the prices will climb. Just my 2 cents.

I also hate to see of what has happened to this CL bike! I wish that the owner would have realized that this is not a $2.8k worth bike, but.... of well, "It is what it is"!

I fully agree that the value of the Sport 1100 will eventually go up. I think that the rarity of the 97's, I was told that the production rate of the FI models was around 1300 units with only somewhere between 125 to 205 coming into the US, could possibly hurt the value, since I am not able to locate good quality original parts to stock up on over here in the US. I keep my eyes open, and I'm sure that I will find me another FI 96 or 97 within good time. My bike came from Germany original, so my speed gage is in kph only. I also came over to the US from Germany in 1984, and all of my family is still living in Germany, so I hired them to also keep their eyes open for a good parts or regular 1100 Sport for me from over there too.

I also think that most people who are the owner of a nicer, and so far undervalued, MG will hold onto them. I was lucky when I found, and was able to buy them, my 1985 V1000 LeMans IV about 8 month ago for $6k, which was a one owner 5121 original miles bike, and just about three month ago my 97 Sporti 1100 for "only $5.5k" with only 7.2k miles on her. Both bikes are pretty much museum quality bikes, where the 1100 Sport actually spend almost 17 years of her life being displayed at the Wisconsin Motorcycle museum, until they had gone belly up, and a friend, who also is the owner of Moto Motivo here out of Raleigh, NC purchased her among several other Italian beauties during the museums bankruptcy liquidation sale.
