wd40 question

Have always been a big fan of wd40 for a wide variety of uses. Above all it is an excellent  light oil for my oil stones for sharpening wood working irons. I have noticed that the new spray cans seem to have a metered spray nozzle and there seems to be a preset minimum spray volume. Am I just paranoid or are they sticking it to us? I guess I'll have to buy a gallon jug and `a plastic pump bottle. A brilliant marketing ploy if it's what I'm thinking it is.

Nah. I can still get a light foamy ooze if I press very lightly. Of course, I am ham fisted and it's a fine line between foamy ooze and flood.

I buy it by the gallon. Wipe my lathe and mill down with it periodically.

I don't know, I just went and tried two different cans and they both sprayed after the button is released. I say its  metered . I haven't tried ripping off the new top to see if you could switch it for an old type or if the metering is in the valve. I'll try that and report back, over.

I think those goofy new nozzles are being bought in large volumes by the big chain stores. They look more interesting sitting on a shelf so likely sell better.
I find them hard to dispense right too.

Aerosol cans are a really expensive way to buy stuff.

I buy WD40 in gallon cans, and I've bought a couple of spray bottles with adjustable nozzles that do anything from a solid stream to a light fog depending on how you twist it.   Just adjust it according to the application, and refill the bottles when empty ... ?

I also buy WD40 by the gallon and use a spray bottle .
Not all spray bottles will hold up to it , because it is mostly Stoddard Solvent , which eventually dissolves some plastics .
After ruining some household spray bottles , I got a genuine WD40 spray bottle , and all is well . Easy to fill also .

I know Guzzi owners are cheap but I can spring for a can of WD-40 without having to mix my own.

And if the new ones are "metered" (whatever...) then I'll step out and buy all the old stock ones I can grab.

Hey, some of these Guzzi guys are on a fixed income. That extra dribble of wd -40 could be the difference in getting thier next scoop of ice cream on a piece of pie or not.

Well as it turns out , Beetle is right , you can put an old style nozzle on and eliminate the wasteful drool.  My apologies to wd40 for the conspiracy theory. I can understand the new design as you can't loose the little tube,  but why it doesn't shut off as quick is beyond me. Intentional or not, over time a lot more wd will be used. That's a lot of ice cream.

I use a lot of WD40 . Besides all the ' normal ' uses , it is an excellent lubricant/coolant for machining Aluminum on a lathe or mill , or when drilling and tapping .

Well, you don't really have to "mix" your own.

You just pour the WD-40 from the big can into the spray bottle, maybe once every two or three months.   That beats driving to the store to buy another can.

The spray bottle has an adjustable nozzle so that it comes out in a hard stream if you like, or a fog if that's better for what you're doing.

That feature alone makes it WAY better than an aerosol can with a tube.

In addition, you're not adding to the landfill load by tossing 20 aerosol cans;  AND paying 5 times as much for the product.

If I were saving a nickel or two, or 10%, that would be a "silly Guzzi" thing.   But saving 500% makes a bit of a difference.

True, true. When I bought my first gallon, I thought, "That ought to be a lifetime supply." Had to buy more, though. I'm on my last gallon, now, and getting low. Hmmm, do I buy yet another gallon? Wouldn't want to waste it... <Guzzi content>

It's ok Joe, we understand.  I once bought some generic cheese whiz and thought to myself, really , fake cheese whiz?  Tasted just as gross as the real thing.

Ok, ok, I admit WD-40 has the smell and feel of "correctness" that we all have come to love.
But aren't we all just giving in to the big corporation?
I mean, it's just oil + solvent, right?  It's not rocket science.

Yeah, I buy the cans, but I understand the "rage against the machine" idea of alternative lubes. 


And Lucian, generic cheese whiz?!  I wouldn't even use the real stuff unless I was under the influence (which is often enough).

     It's already been a long winter,,, and it just started, up here in Canuckistan,lol

     To the OP, I buy whatever format of WD40 happens to be on sale, (GC),,, btbh, since I started using my home made jungle juice ATF/Acetone to loosen things up,,, I don't go through the WD40 like I used to, fwiw.
