Saw a Super Duper Moon!
« on: November 13, 2016, 12:30:10 PM »
I saw a very bright moon display last night, during a break in the rain clouds.  Anybody else?

Heard it described as a Super Moon. Very bright.

The moon is brighter because of a couple of factors, mainly the orbits of the earth to the sun and the moon to the earth.

The night sky became almost completely clear, very nice! Amazed when a thin cloud, very high up and moving very slowly, passed between and created a rare rainbow circle surrounding the moon. Never seen one before.

People at the outdoor party were trying to take pictures of it .... I'll see if any good ones have been made public yet. Later ....

Should be peaking in brightness next two nights.

I read the moon hasn't been this close since 1948.

May have some good viewing opportunities here according to the current forecast. I have found that taking good moon pictures is more challenging than it appears.

Closest its been for 68 years. Overcast and drizzly here at the moment so tonight, when it is at it's closest all I get to see is a slight glow in the clouds.

It will be 1 degree smaller tomorrow night but hopefully I'll get to see it then.

There are some that are wondering if it's close approach has helped set off the recent earthquake here.

I'd bet that it had some influence for sure. Can't blame it on fracking?

Cloud cover hid it from us.
I did see it when I was a kid and for me in perfect circs.
I was around 6 or 7 and Dad and I were on a local beach
fishing. Warm Summer night, being cooled by the spray of
waves, perfectly clear conditions and then the Moon rose
right in front of us over the ocean.
I was gobsmacked and just staring at it. It wasn't just a bit
bigger though - it was nearly double it's normal size which
was apparently down to some atmospheric conditions kindly
added to the mix by Mother Nature for our viewing pleasure.
Don't remember ever seeing that beautiful golden yellow
colour again, it was a onecer but I can still see it in my head
clearly.

Maurie.

I have some really good birding binoculars, a gift from my sweetie many years ago. We stood out on the east side of the house and passed them back and forth just now.  Awesome is overused, of course.. but.. we could see individual craters and streaks. Cloud cover now, but we took full advantage of our opportunity.  :thumb: It *was* awesome.
As an aside, Dorcia subs for the pre school and learning disabled kids. She said it was a zoo today.. not uncommon at a full moon, for whatever reason. <shrug>
