Rear tire for 01 Jackal- use a 130/90 or 130/80?
« on: November 15, 2016, 09:30:05 AM »
Ordering a new rear tire for the 01 Jackal soon. I think that I will try the 130 in place of the 140. Currently running a 140/80/17 Michelin pilot active. The front forks are raised slightly so the front is lowered a little. So, what say y'all 130/90 or 130/80? Your reasons? Thanks for the input. Looking forward to learning something.

You have guzziology? Check it first, I mistakeingly order something on the premise I had a 3.5" wide rim and the minimum for the tire I order was 4"  my bad.  So to answer you question look at guzziology (at work now so can't look it up for you).

Old posts on wg told me the original 140 was a "special" narrow run, so I fitted a 130 Avon road rider, unquestionably no room for a 140, at least in this tire.  Other manufacturers may fit differently?

Oh , as for the reason . I ride mostly above 45 mph , and spend lots of time at 75-90 , the 90 series gives a slighty higher final drive .

Oldbike54- thanks for that info. Most of my riding is above 55. Mostly in the 60 to 80 range. Short jaunts thru town then on the road. So with the 90 series giving a higher final drive, does that slow the acceleration? Or is that negligible? (got to stay ahead of my Harley and Honda buds) I am assuming that with the 80 series the final drive would be the same as stock?

The 130/90has a sidewall height of 117 mm...the 140/80 of 112 mm. They are very close to being the exact height. I would call this substitution too close to call...those tires are as close to interchangeable as you'll find without them being the same size. The 140 may last a bit longer due to the additional width, but it won't be much. Same goes for gearing and handling quickness; the difference is so small, you probably would have a hard time telling the difference between the two.

Wavedog is asking for a comparison between aspect ratios . A 130. 90 will be roughly 9 MM taller than a 130. 80 . Yes , a very small. decrease in accelaration , you won't notice it above 45 mph .
