Parts compatibility between 1996 & 1997 MG 1100 Sport
« on: December 02, 2016, 10:57:50 AM »
I thought owning two red 97 1100 Sporti bikes would be enough, but I had a feeling earlier this week about needing to add a little blue into my life, so.....

So I found, and bought me a 96 carb 1100 Sport with 21k miles on the clock. She is a one owner bike, which was a trade-in last week at a motorcycle dealership in Vancouver WA, so I don't know anything about her service history. This bike, just like all of my others, will get a full service before I take her out riding. The dealer stated that everything mechanical and electrical is in excellent working order, and the bike is cosmetically about as nice as it gets for a 21 year old bike. The owner manual and original tool kit are also still with the bike. :) I did ask them to check the gear oil for any metal shavings, and everything was clean as of now. I paid the dealer $2,500.00 for the bike, which included a new set of Michelin Pilot tires, so I'm ok with adding this bike to my stable. I'm also ok with spending a couple of $$$ on her, if she needs it. I also understand most of the differences between the 96 & 97 models, so my question is about the parts compatibility or interchangeability between the two model years.

Are parts like the fiberglass panels and gas tank interchangeable between the two model years? With one being a carb, and the others EFI's, are the engines, transmissions, and clutches also interchangeable? I know that the forks, rims, suspension, and, and, and are different between the model years, but I hope that the drivetrain, gas tank and fiberglass panels are interchangeable.

Also, there are no issues yet with the gears on this 96, (at least from what I have been told), but I am starting to look, and hopefully buy me a parts 97 bike (if someone knows of one, please let me know) as soon as I find one, so I can hopefully take engine, clutch, or transmission parts from it and use them on the 96 or 97 bikes when the time gets here.

Thanks for any advice,

Andy

Wow, what a score. $2500. Is an unbelievable price. I guess you know that Blue is ultra rare, something. Like 17 or 18 imported.

Not sure exactly what is compatible, t the suspension, swing arm, wheels, pork chops and some other stuff is unique to each iteration.

why do you need to interchange parts? I can't imagine needing a parts bike for them if they run now..

He's stockpiling.  It's peculiar trait of some Guzzi owners.     :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

Gas tanks are different on the bottom. Extra fittings for the efi on th 97.

Tail and fairing are the same.

Transmissions are the same on the outside, but gears different inside.

Frames are different at the porkchops.

Drive shafts and bevel boxes are different.

Thanks for the info! I was thinking about switching the blue tank and fairings from the 96 out with my 97 25k mile bike, since her last owner painted this bike from her original factory yellow to red, and the 97 bikes are probably a little better on the road then the 96 model. But, I am going to leave each bike as they are now, since the tank from the 96 is not compatible with the 97 model.

It's entirely possible that you'll find th 96 is fantastic on the road.

Only changes to my suspension were addition of WP fork springs and 10wt oil. Nice improvement.

Hi Michael,

You are correct with your remark! I'm going to give her a complete service / tuneup after she is being delivered to my home around Christmas, and then I go on from there. The dealer up in Vancouver told me that the bike does come with some spare parts, and one of those parts is a new set of fork seals! So there is a good possibility that her original seals are leaking, which would then turn out to be perfect timing for changing the springs out. It's better anyway to keep her as original as I can.

There were something like 14 or 17 blue 1996 Sport 1100s brought to The USA. So yeah, it's a good one to preserve.
