Nice review. give me ping when you're at Conesus lake, I'm about 1 mile from there. there are a few Guzzisti here also if you want to get a ride in. Happy New Year!

Hey, Joe A, it's the weekend of April 29th, East lake Drive toward the top of the lake. We'll hook up for breakfast, or you come stand by the bonfire, or some such. No idea yet which bike I'll bring. I'll prolly stop by that winery across the lake, too. Great area you live.

Far as "get a ride in", it's 350 miles from me, which means it usually takes me 450 miles to get there. So I get my ride in riding in.

I'll set you on my calendar.

I'm thinking that I should pass on this one.  I'd probably get abused by both pirates and squids - maybe at the same time.

Need I say that I would pass? Here's my story. I'd always ridden sport bikes, but as I aged got to the point where my neck and wrists were hurting all the time. What I didn't know was it was a lack of physical conditioning, not the bike.
At any rate, everybody in the family rode Harleys. I tried a couple and detested them. I'm not bashing Harleys here.. but they just don't work for me.
Saw the then new R12C and Dorcia fell in love with it. Thought, oh, it'll be ok. After all, it's a Beemer, how bad could it be? Test rode it on an extremely smooth road the dealer had mapped out, and it was weird, but.. I thought I'd get used to it.
After getting out on *real* roads, I knew I had just made a $5000 mistake. There was no way I could live with the short travel extremely harsh rear suspension and unconnected front. Hated the engine, the more I rode it. Ditch pump is too kind of a description.  There *were* good things. Build quality was excellent, although the chrome immediately burned off the mufflers, replaced by warranty. Dorcia loved the looks *and* riding on it, though. With both of us aboard, the overly stiff rear spring/shock made ride quality uhh.. tolerable. We put 10000 trouble free miles (except for the ABS) on it in short order, but I just couldn't stand it as an only bike.
I started looking for something different, and finally found Guzzi. I've never looked back.

Mr Webmost , don't take any of this personally , the touring version you own was a pretty comfortable mile eater , and certainly unique . The build quality was excellent , and I've seen a couple pulling hacks that had huge mileage .

I test-rode one at a rally. Unique, but too much rider weight is carried on the rear wheel. Comfort and steering precision suffer and the engine is too bland to make up for the aggravation. The less expensive "R" model was a superior machine and the 850 was a screaming value.

Probably true.

And not as clever as you think it was.
Check out the sketch Kev, you're witty enough to see the innuendo. Always a good debate though, I like it.

My next door neighbor let me ride his 1200c for the summer, really liked it. Thought the back rest was a
. really good idea until it wacked you in the back hitting bumps. Other than that and the cream color it was a nice ride. Got alot of attention  by riders and non riders. For a good price, why not?

Had a 1998 R1200c and really liked it.  Smooth, looked great, very comfortable on the highway.  Accelerated very well in the city and cruised at highway speeds without a problem.  You're not going to win any drag races on it so if thats your goal look elsewhere.  If you want a reliable, powerful enough bike, the R1200c is great.

Was thinking it would look really good pulling a hack - wonder if that would solve all the shortcomings this thread has brought up.

I bought one new back in 2000. It was called the Montana model. Came with bags and a windscreen. I rode it 20,000 in 3 years before I lost it in a divorce. Only problems I had were the spoke wheels developed some rust and they were replaced under warranty with some cast wheels from the Phoenix model. Overall, I loved the bike. I rode it winter and summer in Utah. It wasn't fast, but it handled real well for a cruiser. I'd buy another if I were in the market for a cruiser. The styling is very polarizing, to say the least. I'd imagine most of the haters haven't owned one or spent enough time on one to get to know it's personality.

I don't have strong feelings for the r1200c- I'm just not a Pierce Brosnan fan - , but it'd be cool if you could easily "Griso-fy" it into something that didn't look like a shop class experiment gone horribly wrong.  However, that'd probably be the Rockster . . . and I wouldn't realize it until I was in way too deep.

Of all the bike I bought for myself (to keep, not as bikes to flip), I have never bought one that didn't really make me want it beyond what any reasonable, sane person (wife included) could talk me out of!  There have been admittedly some bad mistakes, but how would I have known for sure if I didn't try.

The best part of riding a motorcycle is to tilt the horizon and to lift the front coming out of a corner and to drift the back end powering thru loose dirt and to catch a little air topping a hill and... yeah it's all good!

Yeah, my Grandfather used to back the racehorses a bit too much and realised he should stop. I said to him once "you'll never be able to stop gambling Grandpa" to which he replied "oh yeah ? Wanna bet ?"

I've had two - loved them both. Comfortable, handled well and attracted almost as much attention at gas stations as my Griso.  Power was kind of low but not too bad. I thought it was funny that you can out Harley pipes on them with the right crossover.  Also the chromeheads forum is excellent.

A buddy of mine in Washington state has one...and it is kind of funky...I rode it...and it was OK, but that's it.  I would not own one personally...but I like Pierce Bronson!! (LOL).  IMHO, I would buy a R1200RT or the R1200RS...something like that. :thumb:
