NGC - backyard masonry oven
« on: March 10, 2017, 05:26:08 AM »
I know I know...more total randomness. But things come up, and I can't think of a single locale to gleen from a vast array of knowledgable folks unafraid to share their opinions.

So I'm moving to new place. 10 acres. 7 of it heavily wooded. I was exploring it a bit last night, and getting pretty excited about projects I see looming...although it's likely to cut into riding time.

to the point....I came across this...

So, what would you call this? I ask because I began a search to determine the process to properly restore the existing iron to use, and I can't find anything quite like it online, so I'm thinking my nomenclature sucks.

I intend to excavate the site and create a remote picnic spot, including a wooden deck that allows for acorns and leaves to go through while being a safe spot. Not so far from the house that you can't walk back to use the loo...but far enough that you'll need to plan your provisioning when cooking etc.

Feel free to wax poetic about experience with this sort of thing.

More of a grill than an oven. Nifty find.

nope, solid back.

thinking you put wood in the very bottom and have the air drawn across it and up.

Methinks you've got the earlier version of this^^
Bottom chamber for cleanout, mid chamber for firebox for normal cooking,  All the framing could be rebuilt as  it appears to be angle iron  the grille and doors look cast iron. Cool project

I had one back in another lifetime, yes, it's a (very fancy) grill.. but I guess my question is why is it there? No remains of a house or shelter of some kind? Why would it be in the middle of nowhere? Hmm.

you saw a shot of the lot Chuck. It's a couple hundred feet away from the house, same vintage (mid '20's) on a high point. Again, if its restored as the centerpiece of a small clearing...it would be a very nice spot. I just think the original owner/builder had it as a component of his getaway. He could make lot of wood smoke and not worry about filling the house with it?

I found something very similar, sadly the article it's part of only talks about the table, and not the grill.

Perhaps there's a history of moonshining in the area?
That's the combustion chamber of the turbo shaft. It is supposed to be on fire. You just don't usually see it but the case and fairing fell off.
