Ikon Basix shocks?
« on: June 17, 2017, 08:47:18 AM »
Hi-

Looking to replace the OEM shocks on my 1998 EV. Anyone have any experience with Ikon Basix shocks? I see MGCycle has them under $200 a pair.

Thanks

Not specifically the Basix, but I've had great luck with Ikon products on several bikes. I also liked their stuff when they were Koni...

Were they Koni or Girling?

I'm pretty sure Ikon used to be Koni because it's just the order of the letters in the name that change. Move the i of Koni to the front and you get Ikon. Not sure about Girling, I always thought they were a separate organization. - Pasta

Hmmm, you may be right.  I Googled Ikon Shocks History, and found they are made in Oz, right next door.  For some reason, I thought they were British.  Wot do I know?   :embarrassed:

Very happy with my Ikon purchases so far (3).  I confess that I only played around with the damping on 1 bike, while the other 2  were left at the #1 position as they came out of the box. As I contemplate another shock replacement, I am temped to get the Basix, or for another 20 or so bucks, get a set of Hagons which work very well on my LM1

FWIW:

I have Koni on most of my bikes. Ikon from what I understand is the new owner of the Koni shock designs. I am happy with the Dial A Ride shocks. I'm not a suspension tuner, I have the dial at 3 IIRC and they work fine for me as a street rider not racer. Hit a nasty bump like a bad RR track and the bike just goes over it. The stock EV shock and the stock Harley shock over the same track launched me off the seat.

The Ikon rebuild kit for the Dial A Ride shocks are supposed to work on the Koni. I will find out shortly as I need to replace the seals on a set.

The Basix is a cheaper version of the Dial A Ride. No adjustment other than the normal spring adjustment. They are also not (stand corrected) rebuildable from what I now understand. So when they go bad you toss them. At the price for what should be a good quality and long life shock, that not a bad thing. Springs can be changed/replaced from what I understand.

When I need another set of shocks, I will look hard at the Basix to save a few bucks.

I'm not knocking other brands, Hagon sounds like it might be a good choice and has great customer support from what I have read on this board. Just my experience is with Koni.

JMHO, YMMV,
Tom

Thanks for all the feedback

I think I'm going to go with the Ikon 76101529 which has 3 position spring preload adjustment and  5 position rebound damping adjustment dial. I have to call MGCYCLE Monday and see when they expect to have these back in stock as they are more expensive direct from Ikon USA, unless I can find another supplier.

On IKON's website they do state that the Basix's are rebuildable but no rebound adjustment.

I just put a set of the 7610s on my Vintage. I think that this shock is a good match for Tontis. Fork springs make a nice difference, too. I put HyperPros in, but GuzziTech offers a great house set for a decent price. These changes will give you far better control and restore your bike's ride height.

Just called MGCycle and placed and order for Ikon 76101529 shocks...at $338. They are not in stock but should have them in 2-3 weeks. I was looking at some Works shocks with the ARS but at $800 or so was a bit scary!

I did a custom set of Works and they worked like crap.  Lots of discussions with the engineers why they were not built with the promised 4"+ of travel vs the 2" I got......  I purchased a set of Ikons, bolted them on and they worked like a dream smoothing out the ride on a Bassa.

Thanks John...further makes me feel I made the right choice. On the downside i had to take the Breva to work today ;-)  perhaps in a day or two I'll find a reason to take the Lemans out as well as the EV is waiting for new shocks. :thumb:

I feel you made the right choice. Again, not knocking other brands. I have been happy with my used when bought Koni's. They have just worked and provided a comfy ride for my style of riding.

I installed a set of KONI 7610s on my '96 California back in 2001 when I purchased the bike.  It was the last set of KONIs available from Eurocity Cycles in Colorado Springs.  I set the damping to the third setting (middle) and springs on the softest setting. (I only weigh 145#).  Rides good over all bumps and they haven't leaked yet.  Think I got my moneys worth.

I'm running Ikon 7610's on my bike.  I'm very happy with the quality but I'm not an aggressive rider.  Don't know about the Basix.  Mine were about $400 USD delivered to my door.

Same here. 7610-1676 on a couple bikes, very good in my opinion. Able to adjust both dampening and rebound. Top quality.
