Center Stand Springs, V50 Monza
« on: May 20, 2017, 09:27:47 PM »
Hello again,

Is there a special tool, or special technique, for fitting the center stand springs to the center stand of the Monza? The springs are supposedly the right ones, but they are very stiff and I can't see how I'm supposed to stretch them enough by hand to get them onto the two pivot points. Do I just need to man up?

For what its worth, on my T3 I found that, if I attached the springs to the frame anchors and to the anchor points on the stand and held the stand horizontal, I could then get the bolts through with little effort. I hope it helps.

Put thick washers in between each coil of the spring to elongate it first. Fit the spring, then pull out the washers with pliers. Coins work well if you don't have anything else suitable.

......the secret being to put said spring end in bench vise, pull (flex) other end toward you, insert washers on far side, then push away and insert washers on near side; repeat until more than enough length gained.
(learned this trick from an A&P installing rudder springs)

Well, the prize for best answer goes to...InjunDave!  :thumb:

Taking the center stand off, then suspending it by the springs and having a teenage boy pull on the stand until the holes lined up well enough to get something in the holes, and then doing final adjustment with the correct mounting bolts did the trick very nicely. Thanks InjunDave!

I'll store the pennies in the rings idea away for later. What is an A&P, anyway?
