I have always said that most motorcyclists seem to know what their head is worth. Some take steps to protect it and some don't.

If you think your head isnt worth the price of a good helmet you are probably right.

I unloaded in a deer crash, and slid/tumbled 55 yards. You slide until traction takes over and you start rolling. I must have rolled at least a dozen times (seemed like forever) and on every roll I could feel & hear my helmet bang the pavement. Not the 1st time, either. I don't go around the block without one.

I overran a corner on the track a few years ago and hit some mud/dirt at about 50 mph. The bike did an end over ender and I did a superman flying through the air. I landed on my face and completely destroyed the front of my full face helmet. While I slid on the ground face first the chin of the helmet acted like a bulldozer and completely filled the inside of my helmet with mud and dirt. Other than a few broken fingers from the initial impact I was totally fine. Without the full face helmet I would have lost my face. I wish I had kept that helmet to show others but I was so shook up I just threw it in the garbage!
Like wymple, I don't go around the block without a helmet.

The pertinent question is:
Would the rider wearing the helmet in the picture have been wearing it if there were no helmet law requiring him to do so, AND would he have been satisfied with the tradeoff between freedom and risk that is implied, AFTER he crashed?
Wish we could ask the rider and see what he says!

Another interesting question is, "How important is image to a motorcyclist."
A couple of years ago I did a fairly extensive survey looking at the type of motorcycle a person rode and the amount of protective gear worn by that rider. All riders must wear helmets here in Canada so the options were protective jacket, protective pants, full face helmet, boots, and gloves. My observations and conclusions could be summed up as follows:
Cruisers - very limited gear - image very important
Sport bikes - extensive gear - image very important but function also important
Adventure/Touring Bikes -extensive gear - image less important but function quite important
In doing the study, it was alarming to see how many riders were riding with the bare minimum of protection. Of the hundreds of bikes reported the most alarming observation was of a Gold Wing rider who was clearly over 60 years old riding with a very young child on the back. Both were wearing shorts and sandals going 70mph on a 4 lane highway. The only explanation I could think of for this behaviour was that the rider assumed that the Gold Wing was essentially a car?
