Road trip destination Adirondack region

Got four or five days coming up to blast off somewhere.  We really enjoyed our last trip over to the Lake Placid area, just happened into the America rally, and saw some beautiful country.  We thought we would go again this summer.  Thinking about the Thousand island area,  Any suggestions from the more knowledgeable here about the region?  We thought about maybe crossing into Canada also if we knew of a worthy destination above the lakes.  TIA , dave

The Thousand Island area Alexandria Bay, Clayton, Cape Vincent, Chaumont Bay, Sackets Harbor, Henderson Harbor and a few more points South.  There are roads along much of the shore of the St Lawrence River and Lake Ontario.  All good areas with some nice things to see and do.   Watertown should have hotel rooms and there is camping at many areas including a few of state parks.  The area is a couple of hours away for me and I enjoy riding there.  I can't help with Canada as I usually don't cross the border much.  Mike

Right about in the middle of the Adirondacks in NY, there is a really worth while museum. Multiple buildings with lots to see. Be aware, you can spend the better part of the day there. Lots of fascinating stuff.

Tibbit's Point, ferry to Wolfe Island (not much to see on the island), 2nd ferry to Canada- charming city of Kingston makes a nice day of it. Cape Vincent if you're into old wooden boats...

Be aware that many hotels & resorts in the Adirondacks do not open until July, when their season starts.

Adirondak Museum in Blue Mt. Lake. Yes, very cool. Most hotels, motels are open year round. Winter activities are a big attraction up there including hiking and snow mobiling.
Many rooms in Watertown, also Canton and Potsdam which are college towns. Most maps define the park
area. That and the area along the St Lawrence are most interesting.
Lots of interesting roads in Canada north of the 401 to the Quebec river but I will leave those details to the Canucks.
When going to Canada take the ferries from Cape Vincent to Kingston. A small ferry takes you from Cape Vincent to Wolfe Island ($) then a large ferry runs from Wolfe Island to Kingston (free). Spend some time in Kingston, very nice town on Lake Ontario.

My fondest memories for an overnight weekend motorcycle trip were in the summer of 1977, when a group of us motored up to Lake George and the surrounding area - - Garnet Lake, Whiteface Mt., etc. on our bikes!

At the time, I was riding a 1977 Yamaha RD400!   - - just like this one, same color and all!  Good memories!!  :1:   Purchased NEW at Danbury (CT) Yamaha for about $1195 back in the day!  Those were the days...

Not to be missed is the road east west between North Hudson and Newcombe...then, if you like some rough road you can visit Tahawaus, the abandoned village in the center of the High Peaks, gannet mine, old mining camp...

Of, course, now your in the middle of 13 valleys with no roads, long way to find a diner...bring snacks. Mid week on the north side of the adk's is most empty, and the bigger towns can be touristy on summer weekends for water parks, souvenir stands

If you draw a circle that's the inner region of the park, then with roads radiating outward toward all directions

Certainly less mountain viewing than the Whites, but more more open road wide two lane riding

There is a north south run thru the Tug Hill plateau area ( highest snowfall on the east coast) on the eastern edge...great run thru small farming communities...I remember an early fall run thru beautiful two lane with 10 foot corn everywhere

Mid week camping available, use reservations for the weekends...there was a camping area in the NNE area with over two hundred sites, five were being used when I got there...

In and around North Hudson has become a museum of old drive up motels that died when the interstae came thru, pretty funky

Always the drive up to the top of Whiteface

The area around the ski jumps got too crowed for me at the hieght of summer

Everything is just a little further than you think...all the wiggles adda little time, but generally well maintained wide two laners...with an abundance of little stuff to get lost on...

First thing, pack your passpOrts, Canada is no longer an free access. Otherwise, some of the best riding in the country is there. Since most areas are sparsely inhabitated, fast food places are not there, THANK GOD! , local spots offer a taste of the locale.
Favorite roads are the ones that follow rivers, and of course the lack of crossroads mean very few stops.

Fort Ti is at the south end of Lake Champlain and Ausable Chasm is north of that.

Another fun thing is to ride the ferries across Lake Champlain to Vermont and back.

 and if you are a rock hound and want a break from riding, there used to be a garnet mine in the Southeast corner of the ADK's you could try your hand at.  I know NY has an enhanced driver's lisc that functions like a passport for entry to and from Canada, perhaps ME has such a thing.  Sacket's harbor had an interesting museum relating to the War of 1812, probably still in action.  The Museum in downtown Watertown has some beautiful wood, they really did it up big in the day, and the Castle up at 1000 Ils is worth the boat ride.  Unfortunately the tourist season is short so room rates are absurd or obscene, depending on your view.  My wife and I camped at Three Rivers (Q)only to wake up the aroma of a pulp mill, yuuk; later camped at a Provincial Campground between Quebec and Toronto I think)that was empty on a Friday (how odd it seemed) until Sat am when we awoke to the loud honking and terrible stink of many thousands of Canadian Geese pooping all about us and attacking when we fled.
