Noisy NOS 8/35 Gears
« on: July 03, 2017, 10:48:40 AM »
Hey all, hoping someone has had experience with NOS 8/35 gears back when they were new new stock. Bought a set of NOS gears about a year ago and they were recently built in a deep sump housing by a qualified technician with loads of Guzzi experience. As I remember, they did have matching numbers inscribed.
Filled with 360 ml 80/90 Dino oil and a bit of Moly.
The 'problem' is they make a clicking sound when the wheel turns; sounds like the gears are colliding on contact instead of meshing at the designed angle. Same noise when the driveshaft coupler is removed so ujoint and UJ carrier bearing were removed from the equation. UJ and carrier bearing were inspected last winter .Tech who built it opened it up again and found wear pattern to be normal and nothing unusual. First oil change showed some very fine magnetic debris - only a little more than you'd see from a routine oil change.
Refilled with Sythetic 75/140 (no moly) and have put about 200 miles on it. Seems like there is more vibration than normal especially during on and off throttle transition. Wheel turns easily by hand whether the bike is hot or cold so nothing is binding up. Please note: NOT talking about letting the bike idle in gear on the Centerstand. Noise is clearly heard when underway or wheel is spun by hand.

Have had several Guzzis with 7/33 gearsets that don't make this clicking sound - only a normal whirring.
Did the older sets make this noise during break in? Or all the time? Or might these have been made on the first Monday after the August vacation? Any advice or info from those who've BTDT greatly appreciated!

Sounds exactly like the rear drive Sean Fader did for me. Used 8/35s from an Ambo case swapped into a deep sump case. Made a clicking noise while spinning the wheel by hand, terrible vibration through the pegs when on the overrun at 45 mph. Sent it back and he corrected it (eventually).

Clicking noise at every tooth? At every driveshaft rotation? Every wheel rotation?

You guy have me worried. I just got an 8/35 set from MG Cycle. And I don't have much experience at setting these up.

Good judgement comes from experience.
And experience. That comes from poor judgement.

Sounds like every time the teeth engage. Clicking sound is greatly reduced when wheel is spun backwards.

Be sure to read both of Pete Roper's articles on how to set them up! And your 8\35s are current production from Stein Dinse (?)  so the quality should be much better due to advances in gear design. Still think mine were made on a Monday or Friday...
