Wow! The centerstand bolt was loose!
« on: July 03, 2017, 02:39:22 PM »
Over the winter, I bought the brackets, springs, bolts nd center stand and put them on my '08 1200 Sport. Today I was checking things and the left center stand bold had loosened probably 4 turns! Couldn't believe it! I checked it because the center stand stop was not quite lined up with the other stop on the left side. Is their a certain size lock washer that could be used there?

I was following a friends Norge to the shop and had to flag him down. The centerstang LH bolt had come out and stand was hanging down on an angle. There was a tech bulletin at one time saying to blue loctite the bolts in place.

I better ck mine!  Tom and I put the stand on my 2008 12S in 2010 (65k miles ago)  and I don't recall using Blue LokTite.  Thanks for the reminder.  Never hurts to check!

A few miles out from the Virginia rally in Buena Vista a few years back, my son motioned for me to pull over. My centerstand on my Breva 1100 had come loose on one side and was hanging down. I rolled in to the rally with bungee cords holding my centerstand in place.

It seems to be the LEFT SIDE BOLT. The right side is still tight.

Loctite that one too. It cannot be trusted to stay tight.

BTW: The only lock washers that work are the Nordlock type. Split ring and star washers will loosen faster than with no washer or plain washer. Thread lockers are your friend.

BTW2: Loctite Blue is 242. They now make 243 which is also blue and is designed to be used on thread that have oil on them, i.e., that are not clean.

Is the pivot point nicely greased ? If not, the bolt can be turning as you roll the bike off the stand, the one on the other side will be tightening while left side will be loosening. Also if memory serves, the bolt must be tightened and then the lock nut nipped up to spec in that order. On my Norge, the cross piece that runs between the two legs actually broke while riding on the M 25 heading to Dover and the thing dragged on the ground. Fixed when back in Oz, but check that the weld is good on the cross piece.
