Car a/c compressor rebuild
« on: July 06, 2017, 11:45:37 PM »
Anyone rebuild one?  The only parts I could find are bearings and the stuff before the actual compressor.  I  know that I can r/r the compressor.  Seems ridiculous when only the seal has gone out.

McQuay, Four Seasons, Murray and Everco still make seal kits for most A/C compressors and should be available from a good parts house. I've also been successful on e bay for some of the real old kits.  Happy Hunting!

Do you have the tools to remove the old seal and install the new one?

This is not a easy job if you don't.

My thinking is that pressing in the bearing is the real work.  Putting in the seal should not be as hard as pressing in the bearing.  Tell me where I'm wrong.  I'm still looking on leads for a rebuild kit.

What kind of vehicle is it? I am looking at the same thing on my 97 F 150 Pickup. Seal behind the clutch has a leak. From what I have read,You will need to replace the reveiver dryer also, I have been looking at complete kits on ebay with a brand new compressor for about $150. I have been spending alot of time online learning as much as I can. I want to do this myself if possible like you.
AC work can be tricky, and you need some special tools, have you done any ac work before?
Rick.

I recently replaced the clutch pulley bearing on a 1992 Chevrolet van (A-4 compressor);  I used a press and a large socket.

It's important to properly support the pulley because it is quite thin in places, and it can be bent if not supported.

The bearing was less than $20US.

Back to the original question, I have never disassembled and reassembled a compressor.  There is too liability involved (having to do it again) when a new compressor (with a warranty) is available.

Yeah.  Only have done r/r work.  Figured that if I'm replacing the compressor, I could rebuild it, if I can get the parts.  I'm looking at either the Hyundai Accent first or the PT Cruiser.  Probably the Accent if I can get the compressor parts.

Just a quick search on ebay shows several seal kits like this.http://www.ebay.com/itm/A-C-Compressor-Shaft-Seal-Kit-Fits-Denso-10PA15-10P13-10P08EFS6-6E171-C171-/181949397122?fits=Make%3AHyundai&hash=item2a5d077882:g:e1AAAOSwHQ9WWaFi&vxp=mtr

Identify the compressor  and your half way there. Re-sealing is not a big deal but CLEANLINESS is . Once you get to the seal if there are any metal particles your done. Compressor,Dryer and flushing the lines will be necessary and usually not a do it at home job. If all is clean, replace the seal, gaskets, o rings and sealing washers, New clutch bearing while your in there. Add oil to spec, reinstall and evacuate system for at least 2 hours! Leak Free?? add refrigerant till full and enjoy the nice cool air! The Chrysler compressor will  be real similar and easy to do. A good factory manual will give all the capacities and torque values you'll need.  Hope this helps.

Thanks for the Ebay link.  Nothing for my car.  Looks like a new compressor instead of the rebuild option.  Will keep looking.
