According to an article by RideApart entitled "The Early History of Husqvarna Motorcycles," the owner's manual for the 1903 FN-powered model included the following instructions: "If the petrol is too cold, you can warm up the carburetor by holding a burning newspaper or other sheet underneath it. Do not under any circumstances use a welding torch to heat it!"
This from the country that gave us the Volvo.
Way back in the way back when I installed custom yacht joinery for a living, had a Dane working for me, name of Marten Aalso, with, as I recall, a caret above the second "a" and a couple dots above the "o", just to make sure no one would ever doubt he was a genuine Dane. At any rate... so I had a guy swap me a BMW R60 in exchange for some work. Well, you know that weird sideways kick start? Got reluctant one frosty morning, so Marten tells me how, in the old country, they used to light a crumpled newspaper and throw it beneath the bike on a cold morning. Idea was not to heat the sump; idea was to heat the air.
Says his Dad was a mechanic, & used the same trick on an old Model A.
