No get up and go - carburetor clam?
« on: July 27, 2017, 11:54:33 PM »
I recently took off without opening the fuel petcocks, on my '85 California II, managed to get a couple blocks away before I noticed anything.  After I opened them, though, there's still some fueling problem - I can put around the block at moped speed, but if I widen the throttle it chokes - decelerates, uneven firing etc.

I guess it may be something lodged in one or both carburetors, that lets a little gas through but wedges when the flow comes up.

I imagine most of you would have gone through the carburetors and found out, in the time it took me to write this post.  I once had the ambition to do that, many years ago when I had a lot of trouble with carburetors as they were (I think) picking up gunk that had accumulated as the previous owner hadn't ridden it for years.  I think I still have the stack of printed-out instructions from various sites, on Dell Orto carburetor disassembly, and I did get so far as to get the units almost free from the motorcycle, but found that I could see no way to disconnect the cables, a point that none of the instructions touch on, and at this point it seemed clear that my best bet was to get the motorcycle to Moto International.

I suppose that option may be available to me in the present case, taking some route to Moto International that doesn't require speed in excess of about 8 mph or excessive uphill grade, but I just have to wonder if someone could me in without too much trouble -- how do you disconnect the throttle cables?

Or for that matter, is the carburetor the right place to look?

The only slightly unusual pieces are fuel filters (pleated paper things in a clear bell shaped housing), and European carburetor jets.

I would at least turn off the fuel and pull the float bowls. Easy to do. Inspect for water or grunge. Turn on the fuel and make sure it flows well. Reinstall the float bowls and try again.

My Eldo indulged in a float stickage incident once. You have to rap the carbs with the handle of a phillips screw driver.

Has to be phillips though....
That's the combustion chamber of the turbo shaft. It is supposed to be on fire. You just don't usually see it but the case and fairing fell off.
