Need help, V7ii rear hub leaking
« on: August 27, 2017, 04:52:20 PM »
Hey gang,

Kinda an emergency here. I've got a V7ii, I'm 125 miles from home (Brooklyn), just had a great ride, got off the bike at my turn around point, and the rear hub is pretty oily.
I'm no mechanic, but it looks like it's been leaking for a little while, oil is sprayed on the tire.  I've been stopped for 30 mins, and there's just a drop or two that's formed.

Is this just overheating? Is this catastrophic? Do I need tho find a motel?

I'm in montauk on long Island, if anyone knows anything about here.

Trying to upload photos, but there's hardly any signal

Chuck,
Sorry for your trouble. I can't really tell where it is leaking from from the pictures. Check to see if both the fill and drain plug are tight. If you must ride it make sure you clean all that oil off the tire and wheel and check the fluid level to see if it needs to be topped up, and check/ repeat every 20 miles or so. If you can't make it all the way I'm in Huntington tonight, which is a little more than halfway home for you. You are welcome to leave the bike in my garage and I can drive you to the LIRR train station so you can get home.
PM me if you need my phone number.

Dan, thanks for your reply!

Please excuse my misuse of the appropriate jargon, like I said, I'm no mechanic.

I am almost certain all the oil came from the top plug. There's the top plug, the rear one, and the bottom one.
I cleaned it all up, and I believe that there was very little oil that leaked, it was just well distributed.
I don't have any tools, so I have no way to check the oil level. The plugs feel tight.
I'm going to baby it back, see how far I get before it leaks again.

Is it possible it just got hot and pushed a few drops passed the seal?

It shouldn't leak out of the top breather cap. Was the fluid recently changed and perhaps overfilled?

From the service manual:
Replacement
CAUTION
THE UNIT MUST BE HOT WHEN THE OIL IS CHANGED AS UNDER SUCH CONDITIONS OIL IS FLUID AND THEREFORE EASY TO DRAIN.
NOTE
RIDE SOME km (miles) TO WARM UP ENGINE OIL
• Place a container with + 400 cm3 (25 cu in) capacity under the drainage plug (3). BOTTOM
• Unscrew and remove the drainage plug (3). BOTTOM
• Unscrew and remove the breather cap (2). TOP
• Drain the oil into the container; allow several minutes for oil to drain out completely.
• Check and if necessary, replace the sealing washer of drainage plug (3).
• Remove any metal scrap attached to the drainage plug (3) magnet.
• Screw and tighten the drainage plug (3).
• Pour new oil through the fill opening (1) until it reaches the cap/dipstick hole (1). REAR
 CAUTION
DO NOT ADD ADDITIVES OR ANY OTHER SUBSTANCE TO THE FLUID. WHEN USING A FUNNEL OR ANY OTHER ELEMENT, MAKE SURE IT IS PERFECTLY CLEAN.
• Screw and tighten the caps (1 - 2).

If it's blurting out of the breather it's been overfilled.

Take the level plug out, (The one you describe as the 'Middle' one.) and see if oil pours out. When it stops put the plug back in and clean up the wheel and tyre and ride, gently, to a shop that knows what they are doing.

Chances are this is the other end of the issue people have with the gearbox being drastically under filled because whoever is doing the service gets the terminology mixed up. Also check the gearbox isn't radically under filled because if they've over filled the bevelbox chances are they've put nowhere near enough in the gearbox and after 125 miles that would mean the gearbox would be toast.

Yeah, it's most probably just overfilled. Check the amount of oil.

DO NOT ADD ADDITIVES OR ANY OTHER SUBSTANCE TO THE FLUID.

Whenever I read this sentence in a manual I get a bit scared. On my first service dealer put some magic powder in transmission oil and mixed very well before he poured it into the bevelbox. I asked him "What is this for"? He replied: "With this inside also your kids in 30 years will be driving this bike. It's protecting the sprockets". I have no idea if that's true, but he worked at Guzzi factory back many years ago.

Sprockets? In a bevelbox?

Find another dealer.

OK, so, based on info here and other stuff I read, I'm pretty sure it was blurting out the breather.  I don't know why she'd do it *now*, I've ridden a couple times since the last service.  This was by far the longest and fastest ride I've had in a long time, though,- this was a three hour run, mostly between 60 and 80 mph.
Based on this hopeful assumption, I did drive home to Brooklyn from Montauk, gingerly.  Kept it between 40 and 50, stopped every 20 minutes, checked for oil, burning smells, etc.  No other signs of problems, ride was fine, made it home alive.

So I'm going to take her in to the shop to check it out, but what are the proper amounts?  Pete referenced the gearbox being underfilled and the bevelbox being overfilled.  I don't have the service manual, I thought it was only in Italian or Dutch or something?  If anyone could tell me what the right amounts are, or point me to the service manual, I'd appreciate it.  I can't really question the mechanic if I don't know the right stuff...

Thanks for all the help!!!

Guzzi calls what we call the rear drive the "transmission." There have been cases of grossly overfilled rear drives.. they'll puke it out, probably no big deal..might blow a seal.. and grossly underfilled what we call the transmission.. a really *big* deal. If that has happened to yours, it's probably toast. I did a quick search on thisoldtractor, and didn't find a manual for the V7II. I'll look some more.

Edit:
Ahh, here you go..

over by GuzziTech, there is a thread regarding to this as well.

Some people's final drive (the part that connects to the wheel) seal were failing as well as overfilling of the oil.

http://www.guzzitech.com/forums/threads/final-drive-gear-oil-leaks-v7-v9.17327/

your picture looks almost identical to the one that are failing there.

The mechanics of Brooklyn moto Guzzi thought the same thing, they are disassembling it as we speak. They said it's probably under warranty.

It better be unless you been poking at it...

As the day of age of the motorbike, nothing should be leaking unless the user abused it...at least that is how warranty works for me LOL...
