NGC BMW Question

I have a niggly little dent in my BMW gas tank that has been there for about 20 years. I have a good friend that has been doing paintless dent repair for about 20 years and he thinks he could probably fix it. He just asked if the tank is doubled walled and I didn't know. Anybody in the collective know if the tank is doubled walled or not? This is a 1988 R100RS

 '88 RS , and unless something changed from '84 it is single wall .

I have never come across a double wall tank . What bike has one ?
That tank is coated on the inside with some red stuff .

I had an '88 RT and a buddy of mine had an '88 RS. Positively single wall tank.

Don't know. He mentioned he has run across them and that he has a separate process for each type. The double walled process is not as successful as the single wall process which is similar to repairing a vehicle fender. Just don't know if he can get his tools in the tank and around the filler neck that extends down into the tank......will see.

Me neither. Sounds like a solution to a problem that doesn't exist.

My only comment would be that the BMW fuel tank metal appears to be much heavier/thicker than car bodies, and might be more difficult to work with using paint less dent removal (thinking vacuum process like DentWhiz.)  Just an  opinion, not fact.

He has a large variety of tools, similar to the picture below, he uses to attack the dent from the backside of the sheet metal in single walled construction. He says he uses a "vacuum" process on double walled construction.

It's very definitely single wall metal. I've removed a lot of dents from that style tank using bent rods with metal balls welded to the end. It can take some time to pull a dent, but the German paint is usually good enough it looks completely undamaged when done.
