Arcane small part for Stelvio NTX
« on: October 16, 2017, 02:57:08 PM »
I'm having trouble identifying a part using the Stelvio NTX parts manual (both my downloaded one and the one at AF1). On each side of the fairing there area wind deflectors; their lower mounting screws are threaded into a funny little rubber plug that has a threaded metal insert in it. The diagram in the parts manual doesn't clearly depict these things, the screws are #26 on the second page of "Front body - front fairing", but the descriptions for anything near the lower screws is either lost in translation or doesn't describe the thing I'm looking for.

Anybody know what I'm talking about, and which part it really is? There's one on my bike that has the embedded insert tearing away from the rubber portion. Thanks!

No, nuts won't work. The thing I'm looking for acts as an expanding plug in the bodywork; it's a rubber plug with a metal threaded insert molded into it, and when you tighten the machine screw into it, the plug tightens in the hole in the body plastic.

I don't think they expand, but they do spin if messed up. Another member here drilled tiny holes on rubber next to brass insert and inserted super glue. It worked.

Yep, well nuts.  Be darn careful with those little suckers.  If you put too much torque on the screw it will cause the well nut to spin in the plastic tank.  That's a big deal because you cannot take the tank off until you take off the fairing bits which are secured by the darn screws that are now spinning uselessly.  In many cases that means you need a new tank.  Yep, I know from bitter experience.  I strongly recommend coating the screw threads with anti seize and then only tightening finger tight.  I'd also urge you to throw the darn plastic wings in the trash because the studs used seem to encourage excess torque leading to the well nuts spinning.

Oh snap.  One of my deflectors seemed more chattery and loose at the bottom than the other and I tried to snug up the screw but it seemed to just continue turning with the same resistance and not snugging.  Perhaps the rubber thing-a-ma-jig is spinning.  Crap.

OK, I need well nuts. That still doesn't tell me which part number these are from the parts catalog, or where they are on the durn diagram!

There sure aren't any pieces labelled as well nuts...

The well nuts are part of the gas tank, not a part that you can order from Guzzi.  Guzzi buys the gas tank complete from a subcontractor with the well nuts already installed.

Now that explains why I can't find them on the parts diagram - and now I know what I need to do to replace them! Since I have one good one I can measure it, get the specs and find an alternative. It would have been simpler if they could be ordered off the sheet (since I'm ordering some other stuff anyway) which is why I asked.

In metric? I'd be surprised...

Then again, Ace has sometimes had some odd stuff.

Thanks, Pete! Just what I wanted - I figured they had to have had a part number at some point even if they were now part of the assembly.

Can you remove the deflectors altogether or will that cause something to fall off inside the tank?  May be a stupid question ...  :embarrassed:

Wondering if the deflectors create more turbulence than they help with?

The ones on the 'Turdio' were long gone before I bought it. Whether or not they are anything more or less than a cosmetic affectation I have no idea but I haven't died horribly due to their absence!

I never did install the deflectors on my '12 Stelvio.  My dealer -- Rose Farms -- did not install them during the setup process and I just left them in the plastic bag.  The threaded inserts are part of the tank, nothing will be hurt if you take the deflectors off.
