HELP! testing Dyna
«

An older model Guzzi w/a dyna ignition (including dyna coils) has lost spark on one side. It's most likely the "black box" but they aren't cheap & we want to be sure before spending the $. Checking the coils is no hassle, I'll do it cold then warm them w/a heat gun & test again.
Question...anyone know a way to test the hall-effect pick ups in the distributor? I have a Fluke 73III digital VOM but I don't know if it will react fast enough to catch the pulse from the pick-up. Would a simple light bulb tester work? It's been decades since I dealt w/a balky Dyna, details have faded from memory. I want to have a plan before I go to check out the bike.
Thanks,
Ronkom

Yes its very easy. I have a CX with that system.
Suggestion,
Call Dyna and they will send you a two page trouble shooting procedure. Its just a matter of swapping the pin connections and grounding them
I don't have it anymore (the printed procedure) but they will e mail it to you if you request.
Quite easy to determine if the box/coil or pickup is falt. Requires pulling the tank and will take 10 min to determine.
Had the same problem w/ dropping one cylinder intermittently.
The complete system(w/o coils) is under $200.

When, if, you figure this out, I would be interested in what you find. I have a box full of Dynas I need to test before I put them on ebay.

If you go over each connection you may find it magically works again.
You have 2 of everything try swapping from one side to the other

Mine are not installed on a bike. Will have to design a test setup. Or, I'll need to swap units in and out of the Spii as it's the only bike I have these fit in.
