Muffler mods
« on: October 23, 2017, 02:06:01 PM »
First off let me clarify that I do not like loud pipes on a bike. Ok, that out of the way I do like a little soft rumble and throaty sound which I lack with my 07 calvin. On an 03 electric glide I once owned i punched a 1/2 inch hole
In the front and rear stock muffler partition on both mufflers. The result were a more pleasurable throaty rumble and the motor  felt like it ran a little more free, however I realize that could only be a perceived feeling. My question, have any of you guys attempted this modification to a guzzi with a like muffler system as my calvin and how did it work out for you.  Thanks in advance for responses. Have a nice day.

I did that on an old set of mufflers that came of my G5 (the factory ones). It did get louder, not too bad but I didn't like it that much. Sounded sharper than I thought, and not as deep as I was hoping for. What did it for me was a set of glasspack mufflers Harpers was selling. Valtek brand, not sure if he has any more or any for that bike.

I'd say if you're "done" with the factory mufflers, can't hurt to try. Start with a small hole, that might be good enough. When I enlarged it more in my case, that's when it went downhill (got too sharp and junky sounding)

then that should be your first step. not only to slightly increase the rumble, but it makes changing tranny fluids easier.
this might be the correct one, but call them to verify.

Whhen I purchased my used Guzzi from a MGNOC member in Kansas, he told me that it wasn't totally stock. It came with Harley stock slip-ons. It sounded great and I left it that way. That was '98, still on there.

Lafranconi Competizione for the EV/Cali 1100 are probably the best sounding mufflers I've ever used. Do a youtube search. They are not loud at all and look stock. Harpers still lists them.

I'm on the opposite side from you - I've got Bubb glass packs and they're too loud. Last November I re-packed them and they were fine, but now they're already pretty loud and probably ready for packing again. I'd really like to find a better way to pack them - like permanently! Last time I used glass wool intended as kiln insulation. I've heard of steel wool (in sheets), but that stuff's expensive.

As for an answer to your question, I've seen bikes with extra holes drilled near the exit, but never done it myself.

I'd also not recommend glass packs - constant re-packing. Good thing is the 'getting louder' is so gradual you won't really notice it till someone brings it to your attention.

I put a "H" pipe on my Bassa and that made it just a bit louder. Then I read about others on here who took a hole saw to the stock muffler so I did it too. Sounded great. When riding with a helmet I only heard it when accelerating. At a constant speed it was silent to me. Cheap but not really reversible......

I posted a few video that might help with this.

Original Drilled Exhaust. Video taken a few years ago when I first got the bike troubleshooting stuff. The holes I drilled were about 15mm on each side (drilled the inside baffles)

Valtek glasspack mufflers on same bike, video taken a this month
