Griso near Nashville?
« on: February 12, 2018, 10:41:27 PM »
Hi there,  After years of eyeballing them online, I got a wild hair that I might like to own a Griso.
I've never seen one in person let alone sit on one or take a test ride.  Before I go internet shopping out of state. Anyone in my area (Nashville) have one they might like to show off?  I'll buy the coffee and pie.

Or to continue the internet investigation - those of you who have one - how do you like'em?
I'm thinking about a cross country trip this spring/summer. I know this isn't a touring bike per say but I'm into naked bikes generally.  I'm 6'2" hoping I'd fit.  Range? Seems like cruising you can get low forties for the mpg - that sound right?

What years are the tappets an issue?

Thanks for your input

I've been casually looking for one too Bryce, so if one pops up your way that you're not interested in, please holler. :thumb:
And, per Mr. Roper, 8V bikes manufactured prior to around April 2012 had the flat tappet issue.
I'll send you a PM...

Range? If you are riding legally, or quasi-legally and have a decent map you'll be able to grab a bit over 300km out of a tank. Roughly translated 170 miles or so safely. If you stick the spurs in? Fergeddaboutit!

On the last Ghetto Cabal in Oz we traveled across some of the remotest roads in New South Wales, at times at, (mumble, mumble.) speeds and manages to make it between road-houses, although we did pick up some shit fuel along the way. I've also done considerable distance in the US on a Griso. Once again, fuel range was never an issue. Had a worse time in West Texas on a V11 with a bigger tank but that was my own stupid fault! :D

I'm assuming you're thinking about an 8V? In which case anything plated 2013 on avoids the flat tappet fiasco. I would strongly advise greasing the swingarm and shock linkage bearings on purchase. Check the sealing paint on the 'Sacred Screw' is intact and remap it after choosing your slip-on of choice, (We strongly recommend the Mistral Hi-Pipe with dB killer installed.). After that, as long as it's tuned correctly it should be a turnkey proposition.

Thanks for the details Pete - Steve just sent me your very detailed response to his flat tapper questions.  I definite know a lot more than I did!  To answer your question.
I'd be game for an 1100 or 1200.  Is there anything in the 1100 you'd recommend looking out for?

Seems like most of the griso's I see for sale  have an aftermarket muffler.  I'd be curious which ones sound nice without being so loud as to make touring tiresome.

I too have almost run out of gas in west Texas - coming from the Southeast I'm used to a gas station around every corner.

What's the collective wisdom on a fair price? 1100 and then anything after 2013...

Steve I'll let you know if I see a one that's white!

If you want to see or try on a Griso, most likely be a few of them at Bob's get-togethers  right there in TN.

Got Griso?  Yep!

My bike is a  '11 SE, rollered, stock exhaust and a Beatle Map.  Once it's warmed up it is as well tuned a motorcycle, at every rpm and in every situation, as I've ever ridden.    Kudos to Mark!

My low fuel light comes on around 145 miles on most trips depending of course on the amount of right wrist action.

I talked about getting a Griso for at least 6 years before I bought mine.  Glad I finally pulled the trigger  :thumb:

I'm 5'10" I found my 2007 too crunched up so I bought some lowered pegs from Knight Design, made all the difference, but then I'm as old as dirt.

I'm 6'1" and 235lbs.  The Griso fits me just fine after a couple of tweaks.

Sorry for the foggy picture but it's the only one I have that shows the mods:
1. Knight Design 1" drop pegs.  They make a 1.5" and a 2" as well.
2. KD adjustable brake toe.  It's close to not being needed with the 1" but with the others it would be a must.
3. If you click the zoom twice under the bars you can see Onar's (a member on the Ghetto) risers that he made.  These move the bars up and slightly back giving a more relaxed position.  Those might be hard to come by though.

Thanks gents for the info!

Range and no abs was always what stopped me getting serious before but - you only live once right?
Range seems workable.  ABS....

I actually did reach out to the fellow in Murfreesboro near me.  Hopefully we'll be able to hook up soon for a test fit.

It probably sounds shallow but if I get one - I'm after a black devil colorway or a black or silver 1100 which is too bad because I keep seeing good deals on the orange ones.  I can't imagine it'd be cost effective to swap tins or even practical.

Why not ask? Here and on The Ghetto? You might well find someone with a Diavolo Nero who would be willing to swap.

Im 6’-02” with a 34” inseam. At 53 years old I’ve had 4 knee surgeries and 2 shoulder surgeries. For whatever reason, the bike seems to work for me. I did do the 1” drop pegs and sprung a whole $17 for some cheap Chinese shifter levers.  But it works and it puts a grin on my face. It’s cold as shit here right now and I still ride every chance I get. I haven’t had it for a month yet and she’s almost due for her first service.  It’s pretty much an old fashioned analog bike.  No traction control, abs, shift assist, or any of the other luxury features.  Just me, the bike, and the road.  I’ve had to learn how to be smooth with the throttle and brakes again. It makes riding fun again. No regrets.

That would be my Griso of choice as well, by far.

Disclaimer: This is the Kid's bike. He's finally decided Spot is the keeper.
2018-02-15_09-46-17 by Charles Stottlemyer, on Flickr
Factory large windscreen (unobtainable) all brackets powder coated black
Factory large tank bag
Ventura rear rack kit with bag
Ventura rear grab handle when you are not carrying the bag.
New Braking front Wave rotors (stock warped) outrageously expensive. Brakes are much improved over stock however
All new Braking pads
Heat Demon grip heaters installed under new grips (installed with accessory relay off battery - Factory wiring not butchered)
Rizoma LED blinkers
Rear fender eliminator
Carbon Mistral exhaust
Rizoma knock off mirrors
Guzzi Tech Airbox top eliminator with BMC filter
Less than 500 miles on roller cam conversion from Rosefarm (Do not know what program is in it at the moment - easily tune able - Have not ridden it enough to know what it needs!)
Good tires - 80% ish
lots of black powder coated brackets, bar ends, exhaust guard, etc. I just like the look - detail guy you know - most people do not notice
Under 10,000 miles Do not remember the exact number - I will look Maybe under 9000 - just sad.
Speed sensor and coil wires replaced under warranty.
This bike was an original cam recall bike. Had new cam and lifters installed before I took possession. I bought it as an unridden  leftover, although it had been started. At that time that is what Guzzi did. When Jim at Rosefarm opened mine up for the conversion there was no sign of lifter or cam damage.
Always AGIP 10w60 syn oil changes - no need to say
I know they are not that valuable - would like to have $7500. Just have not ridden it after Spot got road worthy.
Joy rides available in warmer weather!

If that's the Griso I think it is, it's owned by a Guzzi mechanic.

Lots of options appearing - thanks guys - the pull is getting stronger!
I need to get myself on one so I can see if it fits me. My other bike I fit on pretty well  is an r80 monolever with some low euro bars.

I've haven't really been thinking too hard about 1100 vs 1200

What's the collective wisdom on age and mileage.
- that one is Seattle is a nice price - 60k on the odo
I've seen several older bikes with anywhere from 200 miles to 20,000 miles from 2007-2017
Assuming folks take care of things these bikes seem pretty realiable I'm assuming they'll go for 100,000s of smiles

Hi Nashopolis, I've just been lurking on the site and noticed your post. Was thinking about a Griso as I'm about to turn 65 and thought that I may need something lighter. Ran across a few at a dealer in Las Vegas. They're at: https://www.eurocyclelasvegas.com/search/inventory/query/griso. Prices didn't seem bad for the mileage.
I have no relationship to them as I'm in New York. But in addition to my searching, I was laid off last week, so a new bike is out of the question for me . I guess I'll just have to eat more Wheaties and keep pushing my EV11 around.
Lots of luck in your search.
cheers,
Jack
