NGC My dog sheds less now NGC
« on: January 14, 2018, 09:03:52 PM »
My dog's coat has gotten so much richer and she sheds (I swear) 80% less now since we switch feed to Duck and potato  a couple months ago. I'm pretty amazed at the difference when playing roll over and belly rub, she used to leave a bunch of shed fur on the carpet, that doesn't happen now. this stuff ain't snake oil (it's duck oil)..
It is more expensive tho (Guzzi content )

sounds good. My lab mix sheds a lot and has skin issues. I'll give that a try.

We have found some shedding and skin irritation is caused by allergies. Changing the source portion from red meat to poultry often helps. We flip the meals: morning is chicken or turkey and evening is some form of bovine or cervid.

Dogs can react differently to different foods, happy you found one that works for you. Finding the source of the allergy can be tough, if not impossible. Summer will be the test for shedding. Thank you for caring about your best friend, I'm sure she thanks you every day!

Man's best friend deserves the best...that's one good looking happy dog!

I have two myself and once I figured out one was allergic to beef and the other chicken, we turned to goat as the go-to standard.  We mix it up a bit with turkey and bison to keep things interesting, but overall the shedding and itching are under control.  This is all raw food, by the way...although if I had my way it would be a quality dry food for greater convenience.  My wife (the vegetarian!) is the one that insisted on the raw food diet.  Can't quite reconcile that one, but the dogs are happy.

We took our wire haired dachsund to the vet for a terrible smell and spent about $800.00 on treatment that was not effective. After our 5th visit the receptionist recommended another vet in the next county over. Took her there and they did a skin scraping and looked at it with a microscope and quickly determined it was a yeast infection on the skin. Treated it with antibiotics and steroids for two weeks [ same as previous treatment ] and switched to Science Diet Venison and Potato food and symptoms went away immediately and have not come back for 2 years. Convinced me that diet can be much more important than I previously would have believed.

The blue kelpie with that kept my grandmother company till the end and saw a few more years beyond that had a few issues. Mainly he seemed to get a over reaction reaction to fleas, we always had a crap time convincing him to go for a swim. The other thing that helped was a bit of a dust bowl to go lay in normally under the house where it was coolest well it didn't start off as dust but with regular use it would go that way in the category of if it stupid and it works it isn't stupid.

Our Jack the Border Collie started having a skin problem, large itchy red patches, mostly on his chest and belly.   You could tell he was very uncomfortable, although he doesn't complain much (dogs never do, which is why we have to watch out FOR them.)

We checked for mites (no) we changed his food (no help).   Took him to the vet for testing, vet found very low thyroid function, which will cause exactly that.    Put him on Synthroid (now all THREE of us are on it!) and it went away and never came back.   He gets a pill in his breakfast and his supper, skin's in great shape now ....

You never know, you've got to check it all ...

My lifelong experience with many breeds of dogs would lead me to believe that dogs naturally shed less with the onset of cold weather (I'm presuming you're in N hemisphere)
