Norge 8v headlight relay location
« on: December 27, 2017, 10:39:48 AM »
I just had the headlights quit working on my 8v Norge.  The parking lights work but no low/high beams or high beam flash.   Fuses are good and the connectors from the headlights seem to be locked.   The workshop manual I have doesn't seem to show the headlight relay location.  It shows the injector relays, start logic relay, fall sensor relay and what they call the maintenance relay.   Can anyone clue me in? TIA.

Besides the 4 big fuses there is a row above batt area on the inner fender.  All the relays are hung next to batt area on RH side under cover.
It will have these color wires   white        --87
                                             white/black--87a
                                             black          --30
                                             yellow/white-86
                                             blue           ---85
Edit: relays are behind dash and pockets also

Thanks.  I removed the dash panel checked the connectors and wiring -- no issues that I could see.   I removed the two stacked relays and I'll see about checking them.   The wires from the four low beam/high beam lights run back under the fuel tank in a separate harness from the relays. The wiring to the relays seems to be going out to the turn signals. However, the turn signals still operate with the relays removed -- so what do I know!

Now that the headlights aren't working, I can't remember for sure, but I think that they should be on when the ignition is turned on even if the engine isn't running, correct?

Parking lites are on w/ignition, high/low are w/engine running unless it's brite flash. There is also a Lite Logic relay.
If you need a wire diag, PM me. Got one in high def.

Well, I have a wiring diagram, but that doesn't mean I read them very well   I did try swapping the low/high beam headlight relay with the light logic relay with no change.   I'm wondering if it might be the start logic relay.   It hasn't worked in a while, i.e. you have to hold the start button until the engine starts rather than just a momentary push.   It looks like the start logic relay might be what activates the light relays but only after the engine starts.   If that's the case, I'll try replacing or swapping that relay.

That relay #5 on my drawing is fed directly from alternator, black wires in plastic plug. the trigger wire comes from switch.
I would be checking those connections.

Thanks for sticking with me on this Guzzisteve, I found that the "maintenance relay" (service manual) or "starting logic relay" (electrical diagram) was working - at least I could hear the contactors in the relay activating.   I finally found the problem with the lights in the right side lighting relay plug.   I have the lights working, but I've not permanently cured the problem yet.  It may be a loose or broken wire at one of the crimped spade connectors as I can make or break the connection by moving the plug harness.

I'm still puzzled as to why the auto start feature isn't working -- I guess it may be an ECU issue.

Keep looking you'll find it, maybe it's in the dash.
