helmetless Harley riders at 9 degrees New Years Day
« on: January 02, 2018, 12:02:39 PM »
My brother called me last night and said earlier in the day he was in town, Columbia Illinois across the river from St. Louis. He was sitting at a red light and heard a "bunch of rumbling behind him at a red light. He looked to the side and behind him and saw a group of Harley's (" they sure were making a bunch of noise" he said  ). He looked at his dash and the temp was 9 degrees He noticed not all of them were wearing helmets much less full face helmets.
It's hard to imagine riding at 9 degrees even with a helmet much less helmet-less. I suppose there are some on this group have gone for a short ride on a day like that but it is hard to imagine.

Goes to prove that some people can survive frostbite of the brain.

Saw a bunch of brave souls taking the beginner motorcycle safety course in a parking lot on Dec 30th, 31 degrees with freezing drizzle starting, but they were fully helmeted.

I just had my first experienced with a full face helmet at 21 degrees F  How could I have been ignorant enough not to have discovered the wonders of this type helmet 40 years ago. Total head and face comfort. I’ll never ride in really cold weather again in an open face open ear helmet.

I used to play pond hockey for hours in air that cold (although during this winter’s east coast visit I chose not to because age, sense, judgment). Your face will hurt, but the big issue is getting enough feeling back in your fingers to untie your skates.

Goes to prove that some people can survive frostbite of the brain.

The obvious question are they actually in danger of acquiring such an affliction?

Well...that possibly explains the behaviors of some H-D riders I have known. Must cause a similar affliction as ice cream brain freeze.
