My heart leaped - I thought for a second that we'd finally found "The Tractor" upon which the Moto Guzzi V-Twin is based!

I have a BCS rear-tine tiller but it does NOT work well in my heavy clay soil.   I replaced it with a mid-tine Subaru-engined "Merry Tiller" which does a great job.

I don't know the model, but it's a 5 HP rear-tine (the tiller is a removable attachement to the power unit), with forward turning tines that turn .... oh, really fast and cleated tires in front.

IN OUR SOIL, which is heavy clay despite years of working and amelioration, this tiller will work you until you're exhausted.    If you don't lean back, struggling to hold it, it will leap out of your hands and jump 10 feet forward even after your grip is off the lever and the tines disengage.

I used this b*stard for 15 years because I was too proud to admit defeat, admit that I'd picked the wrong machine for the job in our conditions.

I've lent it to other people in the area and they've brought it back, saying "This thing is horrible!"

I have a mid-tine 6 HP wheel-less Merry Tiller now, and it's a pleasure to use, works the soil a foot deep.    You have to control it, but I can just put a little down pressure on the handles to make the rear "plow" dig in to hold it, and it'll dig away till the tines are buried in the clay.   AND I can pull the two outer tines off, and cultivate between rows 18" apart.

Horses for courses, just like motorcycles!

I see, yes the smaller BCS units are pretty light, and I can imagine in difficult soil it would try to take off!
