Guess I gotta brag a little.......
« on: February 12, 2018, 03:12:12 PM »
The Jan/Feb issue of OTL (On The Level) BMW magazine just came out and my SplitWeight(tm) waterproof/stretchable seat cover was reviewed.  Seems the reviewer has had one of my covers installed on his bike for 4 years and 30,000 miles.  Protects his custom Bill Mayer seat and no leaks for his entire ownership.

If you poke around This Old Tractor you'll see that Greg tested my covers against everything else he had.  SplitWeight(tm) seat cover by King of Fleece LLC was the only one that is really water PROOF.

These reviews are also backed up by MotorCycle Consumer News which awarded me the coveted 5 out of 5 STAR rating.

Last but not least, East Coast (CT) Guzzi dealer Jim Hamlin owns 4 of my covers.  Uses them over sheepskin on all his bikes.

Feeling good about life today-as I get out of my plow for about the thousandth time this winter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good stuff...I am very happy with my KoF cover...has worked very well since I bought it now I think a couple of years ago.  Works very well on top of the Corbin seat covering an Airhawk, top notch quality.

Why? I always thought motorcycle seats come waterproof to start with. Even the tan leather seat on my Indian Scout -- I rode it back from Minnesota thru a named storm, pounding rain day after day. The leather appears to have come pretty well treated. I do give it Skidmore's twice a year. Trying to remember the last time water was ever a problem. I do have a riding buddy got a split in the seat of his R1150RT. We patched it with duct tape. Had an old K75 brick with a ratty seat. Took it to Rayco.

Help me out here. I just don't get what this is solving.

The Indian saddle is treated to repel water.  Over time it will pass water if there is top stitching.

BMS, Corbin, leather covered Russell  Day Long and such are all top choices for many owners who ride long distances.  All of these seats will admit water which will rot the top from underneath and, in many cases, soak the seat foam, which then can take over a week to dry.  My covers eliminate that problem.  Most users install them prior to a long trip if the weather looks iffy.  If it's not, they remove it in 30 seconds and the breathable feature of the leather surface comes into play.  Any leather manufacture ( and I have a big time one in my hometown where I really went to school) will mention that water is the enemy of leather.  Now, there are many treatments available but they all compromise breathability to some degree.  In addition, some very well known treatments use petroleum distillate in their formula and that's a big no-no, as is silicon.

IBA competition riders almost all use custom leather surface seating for the comfort and breathability.  These folks are great customers as my cover is the only one that will hold up.  Very important is the fact that it stretches which eliminates any seam under the riders butt which can get VERY uncomfortable over time and distance.  My sponsored rider finished 11th in the latest IBA Challenge (11,000 miles in 11 days) and reported zero issues with water over that time.

Saddleman or many it's Touratech, can't recall, offer a seat with a velour like top and those folks use my cover as water passed right thru.

Sheepskin users are a big customer and, as mentioned above, many AirHawk users place their cushion under my covers to keep it in place.  I'll add that I did not anticipate that use but it's a fairly large market for me.

Finally, as evidence of the need:  Moto Guzzi supplies, as OEM, a rain cover for the racer seat with the Alcantara top.
Russell offers a rain cover for their leather offerings as does Corbin.  Key takeaway is Corbin mentions NOT to use the cover in the rain for riding (so what good is it?) and the Russell leaks (as tested by Greg Bender) and both are "shower cap" construction which bags up under the butt.  This is unacceptable to many customers and, in fact, I ship to RDL customers all over the world just because of this (lack of) comfort feature.

BTW-first year Indian owners are good customers.  I understand Polaris changed the top of the saddle after the second year.  Time will tell.

I trust that answers your question.  I will add that my offering is a top quality engineered product that does what I say it does and is backed up by a rock solid warentee that's unparalleled in the industry.  It's priced like the top dog that it is and I'm proud that it's the worldwide leader in products of it's type.  Like a lot of expensive things in life, it's not for everybody, and that's fine.  It IS for those folks who are sick and tired of purchasing something waterproof for the motorcycle industry and finding out that it isn't.

Kinda like there is no such thing as "a little bit pregnant!"  It's either waterproof or it is not waterproof.

Almost forgot.  I have a BMW rider who's mileage awards are now over 700,000 miles.  A good portion of those are on a custom BMS leather saddle with a SplitWeight(tm) seat cover.  He uses it like I thought when I designed it.  All overnight stops and the cover goes on.  Weather looks iffy, cover goes on.  Bright, sunny, and all that cover is removed and the benefits of sitting on breathable leather is enjoyed.

BTW, some seat makers install plastic UNDER the seat top to prevent water intrusion.  Nice idea but it's like sitting on a plastic bag in the dead of summer.  Many riders experience "swamp a@@" from this construction method.

I've had seats in my shop that have had water trapped between this plastic and the cover and rotted the cover from underneath.

Seats and screens, friends, so VERY personal and dependent on so many different variables.
