Loop frame weird shifting issue
« on: March 13, 2018, 03:23:50 PM »
Hi guys,

looks like I will be tearing down my bike to fix my clutch in the near future, (see intermediate warp thread)

have been reading up on Roper and thisoldtractor technical articles (thanks guys)

While I have everything out, I was thinking of giving my gearbox some attention.

When riding, frequently if I shift down from 3rd to 2nd, the shift goes ultra smoothly but I will subsequently not be able to shift from 2nd to 1st... And often I get a false neutral between 2 and 3....

Is this normal? Any idea what can be done to fix it? wear in the shift drum slots???

Cheers ears as ever

I took 30% off the V700 flywheel and it went from clunky to smooth(4 speed). But, my Cal2 w/sidecar, I swapped it's flywheel for one from an Ambo and all my drivetrain problems went away.

Not normal. Could be as simple as adjusting the eccentric screw that acts upon the return spring or it could be a shimming issue, worn parts, rusty parts, weak return spring, ?

How is it possible that the heavier flywheel for a Cali II can improve the driveline. My own 84 California II (stock) certainly does have some unusual characteristics . :undecided:

Also plentiful present on this old tractor of mine  :azn:
I've often experienced though, that a good working and well adjusted clutch contributes to a smooth gear shift too.

My Cali been hauling a heavy sidecar most of it's life, the 1st one was a SCF frame w/my toolbox from my pick-up mounted on it and a rack over the center which I strapped my toolbox on & portable air compressor. I traveled all over N.IL working on customers Guzzi's at their home or business. I specialized in house calls. In 25Kmi I had to replace the clutch, clutch hub(soft one), drive shaft, coupler & u-joint. The u-joint came apart & lodged in housing while I was almost stopped pulling off the road to check things out, that took out 5th gear in the trans.
I had an Ambo I restored that pulled a sidecar and had no issues w/drivetrain. I knew others w/Loops & sidecars that never had issues. The only major difference was the lighter flywheel. So I put a heavy one in and I have over 100Kmi on it since the instillation w/no issues at all.  I figured it right in 93. That's when the deep spline clutch & auto adj timing chain tensioner was available, stuff is still ok.      Sorry for thread drift.             What's your problems?
