Well. here's something different...

Found this fellow on ADV forum in August, when he was wondering if he should take the Stornello or BMW 800GS to Ushuaia. I (of course) advised to take the Stornello and looks like he was crazy enough to follow a stupid advise.

He is right now in Equador and other than the Stornello seems to dislike the shitty fuel, he is doing good.

If you have Facebok, you can search Julao Johnston and you'll find him.
Under the ADV forum he is "mototrekkin", but is not posting much of the ride there, most pictures seem to be on FB.

We hosted this kid, BAS from Holland back in August. He had imported to NYC and headed to Prudhoe Bay, AK. On his way south he bumped into Bruce Bailie in
Vancouver, BC and Bruce sent him on to me. He stayed here a few days while touring San Francisco and shared some time with Tasmanian Guzzi riders who were here as well. Shame on me, I doubted his resolve and his understanding for maintenance of a big Guzzi. We recently received this picture from him. Not sure where he is heading next.

I really like his choice of bike and the amount he's packing for this journey. So many times you see massive overloaded bikes and the trip becomes a death march to try to get that load across the jungle or the mountains.

He's got a reasonably-sized bike and about the same load I carry to a weekend rally!

Looks like he made it on the Stornello! Congratulations Johnston, and Moto Guzzi too!

<mototrekkin"El Fin Del mundo" - 5 months and 18 thousand miles, Washington State, USA to Ushuaia, Argentina. I've made it! Incredible adventures for me and my Stornello as we cruised through the States, Mexico, central and south America with no major issues. Definitely some highs and lows filled with different challenges but absolutely an epic trip of a lifetime. So this is what a bitter sweet momment feels like.>

I KNEW he picked the right bike!

Although he sounds like he's got the kind of git-'er-done attitude that would have made for a successful trip whether he'd been on a Velo-Solex or a Guzzi ....

Piaggio / Moto Guzzi should definitely capitalize on his accomplishment...an d promote "The Little Stornello That Could"..... and ultimately inspire the to the next generation of Guzzisti!

Very cool!

The Stornello probably tolerates shitty fuel better than the 800GS does.
I've got an F800GT, same motor as the F800GS. It ONLY likes 91 octane or better. Both my V7's are fine with 89 in hot weather, and 87 in cooler weather.

A Stornello or a V7 Stone/Special are both a great choice for that trip. The KLR650 is a very popular choice among the ADV crowd. A V7 weighs 20 pounds more but has a 4" lower seat height, great luggage options, will run on crappy fuel, is low maintenance, and with dual sport tires is a very capable gravel/rough road cruiser as long as you're careful. With engine guards and good luggage you could accidentally flop it on it's side in mud or rough going without much damage. The only drawback I can see to using a V7 as a round the world or adventure touring rig is that if you broke something you'd be waiting on parts for a long time.

I miss my DL1000 for a lot of reasons and trading it for my Cal Touring has made me change some of the riding I've done since. I've been seriously considering picking up a V7 and using it to run the Trans-Lab this summer before it's paved over. My soon to be 17 year old daughter has been riding roughly 50/50 paved and gravel roads with her CT90 since she turned 16 and a V7 would be a very good full sized motorcycle for her to ride this year.
