V7 Voltage Regulator?
« on: April 10, 2018, 11:28:26 AM »
Old subject; but, new potential issue for me and my new 2013 V7 Stone.  I’ve also read every link I can on the issue and haven’t found an answer that make me comfortable.

Is there a “plug and play” Voltage regulator that I can swap out without cutting fittings, etc?

I see one on GuzziTech; however, I’m not sure if it is a direct replacement as it mentions possible fitting replacement.

I cannot confirm plug and play.  The one I installed was pretty darn easy to do.  I did have to make a mounting bracket because the bolt holes did not match the old R/R.

The new mount also serves as a heat sink and should keep the R/R from overheating.
Growing old ain't for sissies.

I can't say about Guzzitech, but you could always ask Todd I'm sure he or someone on his board will answer.

When Cam, Jay, and I all had to do it we figured it was fair to let the electrical engineer of the group do the soldering for all of us. We ordered 4 of the Crimp & Go kits - now the Crimp or Solder and Go kits from RoadsterCycle.com

I'm sure Jay (Jas67) can chime in if he wants, but I suspect we wouldn't have had any problem crimping it, and I know even a talking hairless ape like myself could have soldered it, we just took the easy way out lol.

Hi
Can I suggest you check how secure the connectors are by giving the wires that go into the blocks a tug, as I speak from experience having rushed out and bought a new replacement only to find whilst removing the faulty one and pulling a bit harder than I normally would if I thought it was good, to my surprise the wire actual came out of the connector, Must have been a day when they were short of solder, As for fitting a non genuine RR it's no big deal to change the connector blocks, money saving too
Hope that helps

FYI, there's a known issue on the early 1TB voltage regulators where, for some reason, MG spec'd a unit that charged up at a rate of up to 15 volts, and the failed ones (and there have been tons) are charging above that (in the 15-16 V range) slowly cooking batteries.

When replaced with something like what Jay, Cam, and I used on our four bikes you instantly get a proper charing voltage topping out in the low 14's.

Crimping is fine, but, be sure to use quality waterproof butt splices that have the hot glue in them.   After crimping, you heat with a heat gun to flow the glue.   Alternatively, you get heat shrink tubing with sealing glue in it.

Just be sure and use the correct size terminal and tool for the size wire that you've got.    I had ordered some heat-to-seal butt splices to do the harnesses for our regulators, but, they turned out to be crappy terminals that fell right off the wires despite using the proper sized terminals and wires.   I work for the company formerly known as AMP that invented crimp terminals, and working in crimp tooling, so, I know a thing or two about this.   Sadly, I wasn't able to source any sealed connectors through work.
