That lithograph is interesting, but the steam velicipede would not work as it is depicted. With the fire box above the back wheel and the boiler above that, the center of gravity would be too high to keep the contraption upright. Things would be tough for the stokers, too..

I vote Roper as the first PROVEN ride on a motorcycle. Not just a hoped for idea.
Leonardo Davinci could have been considered the inventor of aircraft, if drawings were permitted.
Leonard also invented the parachute but no one ever tested it or maybe even built it.
Ideas are just ideas until someone actually builds and uses one.
