Convert fuel consumption
« on: April 30, 2018, 03:57:22 PM »
In anticipation of a longish trip to places where people selling fuel ain't plentiful, it did a wee bit of measuring today.

Between fill-ups, I rode 116 kms (72 miles) and needed 7.2 litres to replenish the tank.

This works out to 45.49 mpg in full-sized Imperial gallons or 37.87mpg in those puny small ones.

I didn't think this was too bad for a fat slug with a (edit: fluid viscous coupling).

Nick

Not a viscous coupling! You would hate that.

It depends on how you ride it.  I personally have not gotten 40 on a trip, but I travel heavy.  Mid 30s is predictable.  I have gotten 42 on the freeway running light, and keeping my speed under 70.  If I feel frisky, there's a cost.  I've gotten low 20s with the appropriate behavior.

The trike is 1600# as I sit on it loaded, and a convert torque converter gives me 28.

I really only wrote that to show that even in extreme conditions, the Mighty'Vert delivers acceptable economy.  What mileage does a hack get loaded like that?  It's right in there for the trikes I've polled, and they have the advantage of a transmission. My only option on a steep grade is more gas and let brute torque do th job.  So far it's a lot of fun.  I keep up with the crew, too.   :cheesy:

I'd like to get 30 or better  -- and I think I can.  Beetle, l hope will work with me on that after I get to Texas.

My 78 with DB bags, jammer, loaded would get 42 all the time..

My 76 stripped down no Sheild never got over 35...

Same carb set up, timing. I could only guess there was something different in the way miles were recorded, maybe a different gear drive for the speedometer cable?

76 with sidecar will sometimes get up to 30 mph, but I have a small problem going that easy.

84 Cal II Automatic gets 35-40 regularly, though have gotten 44 a couple of times running  easy. I have stock bags, and also a Guzzi EV Tourer fairing, and lowers on mine.
