Crankshaft plug.
« on: September 17, 2019, 07:34:26 PM »
It's only taken since 2012 but we are on the home stretch of getting a ride on one of these Moto Guzzi's, the site has been very helpful as I had thought they stopped making them in 1974 for one thing.

Heads are done.

The question, What are folk doing as far as the crankshaft plug (Alloy plug from MG Cycle) ?
Just use Loctite and make sure it is lower than the the thrust face or something else ?

It should enjoys its next life.
Reground, journals polished and oil feeds chamfered on the big ends, edge broken on the mains, balance checked with two Mallory metal inserts, sludge trap ground and cleaned within an inch of its life all over.
It is the last part to do before engine assembly this week.

Les, just get a new plug and do as you suggest. A bit of Loctite and then when it is below the thrust face use a centrepunch to put a couple of deformations in the face of the plug to aid its grip in the threads.

As for where to get one? Sure you could order one from Rick and Gordon but it'll cost a motza to get to you. Why not just call Mario or Steve and get it overnighted to you? It's not like it's a hugely expensive part.

Thanks for the replies, I have got a few things off Mario including a new ring and pinion.

I already have a new plug and according to MG Cycle records I got it in Oct 2014 so the alloy should have settled by now.
Can't rush these things.
