New v7iii gas tank lopsided??
« on: June 08, 2018, 06:00:02 PM »
Driving him with a new v7iii in the back of my truck and noticed the wing emblems look out of alignment.  I just refueled and verified the emblems are both located in the same location on the fuel tank but that the tank itself appears to not be mounted correctly.

Is this normal?  I never would thought to check for this at the dealer but looking into the rear view mirror it is clearly off center.

This picture shows you how it is either tilted to the left or lifting on the right.

If not normal I’ll remove the tank and see if it bud the set tight but maybe this has happened to someone else before and they can offer their insight.

Have another glass of vino! Then it will look straight!

Yes, it does look wonky. Probably easily fixed.

When you get home whip the tank off and make sure the mounting bobbins are fixed tightly to the frame. They are sometimes left loose by Giuseppe and if left loose can hole the tank. They’re probably fine but it’s worth checking. Also apply a smear of rubber grease to them before re-installing the tank to ensure that it will slide completely onto the bobbins. It may just be hung up on one side on a ‘Tight Spot’.

PS. That is a lovely blue!

Most manufacturers will have something similar if not identical.

I've no clue how the rubber mounts are secured, but sometimes there's a rod that goes straight through and the rubbers push onto it.
Wondering if that has not been bored straight..?

Each mounting puck is held on to the frame by an 8mm shank 6mm Allen bolt. There is a spacer in the puck so that the bolt bottoms out and doesn’t deform the puck. It’s the bolts that are occasionally loose. I don’t know if the factory has started loctiting them on later models or not but they are worth checking if the tank is off and adding a drop of 243 if there is none.

If one of the metal spacers is missing, the puck would sag, causing the tank to be lop-sided.

I visited my local dealership today and 4 of the 10 or so new V7s they had in stock look the same as yours- high on the right side.

The owners manual does not indicate tank removal though I am sure it is easy enough and way easier than any Japanese bike with a bunch of fairing that needs removal.

I loosened up the bolt at the rear of the bike and lifted the rear of the tank up and then lowered it again.  Just doing this got it about 90% to where I wanted it to be.  At the time I didn't have my flashlight and couldn't see under the tank to try and locate the front mounting points.  So I moved to the task of removing the gas tank sticker and one on the handlebars as well.  That took close to an hour and I ended up having to buy a hairdryer.  Sorry, I shave my head and there are no ladies in the house so I wasted $20 on a one time need.  Maybe I should buy a 2nd Guzzi to make the hairdryer purchase not a total waste of money?

I did notice what I believe to be the charcoal canister mounted about where the linkage would be on a dirt bike.  I thought about removing it and plugging the two hoses on the clutch side of the canister but then thought since it is completely out of sight I wouldn't worry about it.

My final prep task for the day was to remove unnecessary reflectors.  The two on the front fork legs were removed with a screwdriver even though I knew better and yes I nicked the black paint.  I'll hit the hobby store tomorrow for some gloss black paint and touch that up.  The low hanging rear reflector is gone as are the two side ones on the rear license plate.  I'll probably buy some cool looking reflective black decals for the fork legs as I do like having night visibility.

Oh and I had the dealer install the Hepbo and Becker C-Mount side bags.  They fit and look great but I promptly turned their nice black color gray with Scotchguard.  I have never had Scotchguard do this to me in the past but it did today.   The coating seemed to not like the top portion of the bag and it dried into an ugly gray color.   It is as if the Scotchguard is a liquid gray color plastic which if not absorbed into the fabric, sits on top like a thin layer of gray plastic.  I am so bent out of shape I may just order another set of bags.  They are only $199.

Still raining in my part of the world.  First ride probably won't be until Monday but it will be a fun one.

The pad under the rear tank bolt on my bike was turned 45 degrees when I bought the bike and the tank has a little bit of a lean. When I went to correct that I found it's easy to have it spin when you tighten the bold so you have to hold it in place. Having that pad properly oriented when tight seems to stabilize things and keep the tank from shifting.

I noticed that as well and that may have actually been what I corrected as I reattached the tank.

Didn't know there were unnecessary reflectors.

I always add extra lighting to my bikes.  Also reflectors to hold on the license plate.

Didn't know there were unnecessary reflectors.

I took off the one hanging below the license plate holder. But I did replace that with one I put just below the license plate to fill the unsightly gap.

I am replacing the fork reflectors with black reflective tape.  This won't really be a night riding bike on a regular basis so I have decided to take my chances.

Regarding the color coordinated tie downs, I am kind of OCD about colors.  The dry bags I just picked up today are blue in color as well.

Tomorrow I am scheduled for a platelet and plasma donation from 9 a.m. - 11 a.m. and will then get a picture or two of the bike like it will be ridden and post here.

Still rainy today with temps barely 60 we gain about 5 degrees per today starting tomorrow through Thursday.  I'll have a big chunk of break in mileage done by the weekend.
