Progressive brand shocks for loops
« on: July 03, 2018, 07:39:36 PM »
I've had good luck with Progressive brand shocks on other twin shock older motorcycles but I'm wondering if anyone has tried them on a loop frame? The reason I ask is that the Progressive listing calls for the same spring # for this bike as for an early 70's Suzuki 250 that weighs 240 lbs less.
Their 12 series shock # 1202B (you buy shocks and springs separately) is 13" long. Choice of standard spring # 1394 or heavy duty spring # 1367.
They may very well work fine but I'd feel better about ordering if someone here has had a good experience with them.

I know there are other and probably better shocks out there but the Progressive's are available through the shop where I work and therefore fit my budget, no cost shipping and employee discount.  And as mentioned, I've used them on many of my other bikes with good results.

Thank you!

Ken

I used the old 1200 series shocks on my Ambo "Barney" back in '08 when I rebuilt it. IIRC, the springs I used were 90/130 lbs. For a light rider like me (150 lbs.) they were about perfect - plush ride without wallowing or bottoming.

How the 1200 series compare to the 12 series I'm not sure.

Just my opinion: I'd have to get a very good deal on the Progressives and springs for me to buy them instead of Ikon Basix ($203).

Thanks very much. I believe the 12 is the previous 1200 series from what I remember. And the # 1367 recommended by them as the HD spring for the loop has the exact rating that you mention, 90/130. Coincidentally, I'm also around 150-155lbs so I think these would work fine.
I'll check my price tomorrow but I'm in Canada and I don't know if any of our suppliers carry Ikons so I'll probably end up going with the Progressives.

I appreciate your help, your experience is exactly what I was hoping for.

Interesting.  I know you know your stuff but I thought the IKON Basix was the worst 200 bucks I've spent in quite a while.

Two of my customers have raved about how great the Basix are, so I can only go by that, not having tried them myself yet. Both bikes were (original) Eldorados.

That might explain it.  Had them on a 2001 Jackal, specked by them for weight, and they were horrible.  No damping to speak of whatsoever.  I do ride it a bit on the hard side, though.

I knew it going in that they were very inexpensive and the possibility existed that I'd "buy twice and cry twice".  THAT lesson was reinforced as I already knew it!
