2017 V9 Roamer Final Drive Leak
« on: November 19, 2019, 03:24:31 PM »
This bike has been a wild ride.
I bought the bike used in August with only 200 miles on it, but the ABS module had gone bad, so I waited one month for it to be fixed. Then, I got the bike in September. The first day I had it, the fuel hose came loose and all its gasoline came out of the tank. I reconnected the fuel hose and have been riding it regularly since.

Then, came time to for its first service. I did everything with the help of a more mechanically inclined friend to make sure I did not break anything. I adjusted the valve clearances and changed all the fluids according to the instructions in its service manual. This past weekend, though, when I took it to work, the final drive oil started leaking, in fact it leaked out entirely. It's sitting at the dealership now, while they do their investigation to make sure there was no user error.
What I am worried about is them somehow trying to argue that it was my fault. They said they would check if it was overfilled, had the correct weight oil etc. (not sure how they can accomplish either with it being nearly empty, but okay). I'm not complaining about the dealer, though, I know they're just doing their job.
Hopefully, this is the last time it has any issues. Especially, since its warranty runs out at the end of December.

Has anyone gone through similar issues? Any and all advice is welcomed.

Thanks for letting me make this long post.
Best of luck to everyone!

Unsure about the V9 specs, but the V7 uses -

170ml,
Of 85w140,
MINERAL oil.

Using a synthetic in the final drive seems to result in oil leaking through the seals. Did that once. Fix was to replace it with a mineral oil with a dash of Nulon G70 (which probably puts a sticky liner over the seals). Been fine ever since.

And it pays to check that the breather actually breathes.

Sometimes it is found that it's not the seal but the rear drive back cover bolts loose. Pull off wheel and check thoroughly.

So talk us through how you changed the oil in the bevelbox?

I find it very unlikely that a seal going would dump all the lubricant in a short period unless the cage of the crownwheel support bearing had broken up and punctured the seal. Seals will weep and make a mess but don't usually, suddenly, cease all containment.

The fact that this has occurred so soon after you have serviced it would at first glance point to operator error. You didn't try and put half a litre of oil in there did you?
