  A couple of weeks ago I posted that my bike had developed a ticking noise on start up. I suspected a cam chain tensioner problem. Pete Roper suggested an oil pan gasket may have torn between galleys. Sounded logical to me, so I replaced the gaskets. There were no tears, and the new gaskets didn't solve the problem. That's ok, it was worth a shot. All that work came with a fresh oil change, it was time anyway. And, a new alternator belt. It was time for that too, at 50,000 miles. The old belt looked fine, but now I have a new belt and that's something I won't have to think about. Also did a valve adjustment. None of the valves were more than half a thousanth out of spec. Then I remembered something GuzziSteve told me two years ago. I checked the header nuts and they were all a little loose. Ticking is gone and the engine sounds happy. Duh! It's always the simple stuff.

My Stelvio NTX 2012 rattled  like a millionaire's baby on start up during a recent trip

I was envisioning all sorts of doom and gloom within the internals.

My travelling companion walked up to the bike and gave the Alloy Sump guard a kick and promptly diagnosed that one of the grommets had failed.

Sure enough $1.50 later the rattle had disappeared. ... PHEW!!

Something similar happened to me at the last Cedar Vale rally.  V7 ran great all the way up there.  The next morning it was making a horrible buzzing sound, which seemed related to engine rpm.  I was imagining some horrible cam chain or other expensive problem.

Turned out to be a loose heat shield on the exhaust.  Bummed a couple of metal washers from Dusty and problem has never recurred.

I have a difficult time thinking about what Moto Guzzi ownership and maintenance was like prior to the net and of course the helpful folks here on Wid Goose. Thanks all.

We relied on the MGNOC following, and going to rallies. There were some really good local dealers but spread out pretty far. Some of us worked on bikes at the rallies or during the week after. All the warranty was 6 months & 6K miles.

This. The venue may have been different then but Guzzi people have always been a great bunch that will go out of their ways to help and spread info.
