Trailer tires

I have had 9 trailer blowouts this 365 day year.  Let me tell you what I have learned.  If a trailer tire is 5 year old you or going to have trouble, if you get 100 miles from home with out trouble buy a lotto ticket.  And on double axels at 70 mph you got a 50/50 chance one blows will get the other( twice for me).  They don’t just blow some times the tread just peels off.  Last blow out $3000.00.  Tomorrow 4,12 ply tires on my condo.  I hope that well help.  No not all flats on one trailer.Rudyr

I can relate , my last episode sure cleaned off the side of my 7x14' box trailer, lights, fender, everything . I try to keep decent rubber on trailers but I sometimes overload them, that's usually trouble unless I'm lucky.

Alignment? Not only the pull but also the axles. Bearings causing a run hot? Driving too fast? Cold pressures too low?We know you overload. And likely have checked all those things. Look at it this way: They're not dual sets.  R3~

One of the BIG hazards traveling on the slab are people pulling big box(and stock) trailers at 85 to 90 mph!!

Begs the question...

How do you know when your old enough to know better??

The trailer tires have:

1) Load ratings
2) Speed ratings
3) Inflation pressure specs.

If you pay attention to those, your tires won't overheat and blow.   If you just take off with an overload, don't check the pressure, and run as fast as you want, it'll cost money and endanger everyone on the highway.   I guess some people are never "old enough" ... ?

Stop buying ST tires for your trailer. Use LT instead. ST (trailer) don't have a large margin in their ratings, LT (light truck) do. LT of the same rating weighs considerably more because it contains more metal and rubber.

I ‘ve always tried to run 60 to 80 lb. of air and check tire & hub every fuel fill up.  But these new tires or 12ply an they take 70 lb air.  And pulling a trailer over 70 mph your playing on edge.  I’ve got tung, gooseneck & from 4’ to 27’ .  But tire age was never a problem in the past but now with most trailer tires coming from China I think their is the problem.Rudyr

Have had experience with a couple of campers and can back up rudyr. 4 years is all you can safely get out of the cheapo’s the factory puts on. Worn or not upgrade to at least the next higher load rating.

Sitting on the ground for extended periods is what kills a lot of trailer tires. Park it on a slab or boards or jack it off the ground. My experience from driving truck for 4 decades is speed, heat and old age gives the trailer owner experiencing the thrill of changing a tire by the road.

A Littel friendly advice to friends, that run older trailer tires.  Get knee pads a 16/18 pry bar,( for moving the bottom of the tire in when the top bolts or on hub studs) elet. inpaked (charged battery) and sockets for wheel.  Jackstand(for safety) jack.  A good sweet rag.Rudyr
