NGC - Well, here I go again

The 1991 R100GS I purchased in early 1991 is in the shop of one of our best Beemer wrenches.  In 2012, at 128,000 miles. I had the top end rebuilt by his shop (valves, guides, springs, piston rings.) Also front brake master and slave cylinders.

This time, nearly 30,000 miles later, it is time for other things to be refreshed:
- replace petcocks and fuel hoses
- rebuild Bing carbs
- replace battery
- pull tranny, replace wear items in shift mechanism and shim to spec
- replace major tranny bearings
- replace all tranny gaskets and seals
- check driveshaft and advise if it needs replaced .... if not, grease via zerk fittings
- replace diaphragm clutch spring and clutch plate.

Hopefully, it'll be done before it gets too cold to take a weekend ride near the end of September.  This old gal and I go back a long way!

Compared to newer GS's or Stelvios, they look spindly.  But it has been a great long distance machine!

Very cool! I dig older airheads. That one has been a loyal companion,for you, with history. I would say , its definitely worth putting some money into ,and keeping. I like the color combo you have and also a funky turquoise blue they came out with some years back.

Glad you’re giving her a refresh, Bob. It is plain that that old GS pushes your buttons in the best way. Good on you for keeping it close...

I'm going for it!  The mechanic (damned good and BMW certified) called me at home Fri evening.  I'd asked him to give the driveshaft a good look over.  The original made it to 122,000 miles.  That's way more miles than many of them made.  I had a shop replace both U joints, and we got along fine for several thousand miles. 

Then I had the bike up on the centerstand to clean the wheels, and while turning the rear, noticed that it would get very hard to turn about every half turn. 

The phone call was ' this driveshaft is shot ..... I'm not sure how you made it to the shop without it failing.'

So, this morning, I called Max BMW and had a new shaft shipped to Jamie, the mechanic.

My credit card has taken a few hits lately, but I'm determined this old gal and I are going to do some traveling.  Hopefully a late summer trip this year, and a few good rides next year.

Good money after bad?  Maybe.  But I love this old bike.  She has always inspired me to think about (and make) heading West for several days.

Heck no, I'd spend whatever it took to keep such a great bike on the road. I'm not a big Beemer fan, but I'd take one of those early '90s GS models in a heartbeat.
