As a former Victory dealer...having owned a few Victorys...I now own two...they have to. I won’t buy a present day Indian. Build something special...that’s a different story now

They are making moves, but that is a bold one. Not sure what an inline 4 would do for them in this market ruled by v-twins.

I like the move to the FTR1200. That shows an expanding target base.

I don't see them straying too far off what works.

I would love, LOVE!, an air/oil cooled in line four. Not sure if you could with today's noise and emission regs. But something smaller like a Scout but with a steel tube frame, not a huge bike with lotsa alloy.

I was hopping for something smaller like an Arrow cause I like smaller bikes, but I'm guessing cost would kill that idea.

I don't think that's going to happen. I wouldn't if I were in charge.

A buddy of mine in the cafe racer club has all the parts to build one.  That is an inline 4 mounted length wise.  I've visited with him about it.  Modern inline 4's are quite compact with most of the accessory stuff mounted behind the cylinders.  Probably not much longer than a 72 degree vee twin motor would be.  That would keep the wheelbase fairly short.  I think the BMW K100 had a relatively compact 59"/60" wheelbase.  Of course water cooling keeps the rear cylinders cool.  It's quite due able.

Realistically, and most likely, it would be impractical and costly, but POLARIS certainly has the resources to pull it off.  A cool engineering experiment anyway.

Would at least like to see a concept drawing from their design department.... :thumb:

Agreed.    Buyers in this market love the V-twin sound.

Air/oil cooled inline four?   Honda did it with the CB1100.   I don't know if that motor is Euro-4 (or later) compliant, but, I'll bet it likely is.
But, there just isn't much of a market for it.   Most people buying inline fours want maximum performance, which means water cooling.
Those who want an air cooled motor for simplicity's sake, want a twin -- less cylinders, less spark plugs, less valves, etc.
Those who want an air cooled motor for the classic looks, are also likely to want a twin.

When the Indian name was being had for years ago there was a guy w/inline 4 trying to get the Indian name. Seems like he was in CO and it had a BMW airhead trans.

I agree with all you said in this post.  I really enjoyed both my W650 and Bonneville twins, to the tune of approx 50,000 miles on each.

I bought my CB1100 (leftover 2014 Black) for a very reasonable price.

I've spent considerable time getting the suspension where it works for me, and I'm about there.

Re the engine ....... although I've owned several BMW K four cylinder bikes, and never had too many issues with them, it's taken me a good while to finally appreciate what a sweet engine Honda designed for the CB1100.  Agreed .... it doesn't have the 'soul' of a twin, especially a twin with 360 degree crank.  But for those riders who grew up on CB 750s, this bike has to be a wonderful experience, right from the first ride.

For a relatively inexpensive retro bike (especially a new leftover,) this thing runs like a train, whether you short shift it at 3000rpm, or spin it up to 5500rpm.  It'll wind higher, but I've found little reason to do so.

Re JJ's original question ..... I don't look for Polaris to step up and do an in line 4 like the old Indians.

I think the modern version of the old Indian is the now old K-100 BMW.
I think 4 Cylinder Engines are boring.
I like the twin designs

The old straight fours are undeniably cool and lust-worthy but a modern rendition would not have the stripped down essence that makes so many classic bikes appealing.  I had a mentor when I was a kid who told me stories about riding an Indian 4 when he was young.  He said he was too small to kick it over and had to ask his neighbor to kick start it for him to go for a ride.  He said they had a pretty good rocking motion when you blipped the throttle at a stop.
