Sport 1100 output shaft seal replacement
« on: October 08, 2018, 11:32:38 PM »
Lads,

My 6K-miler has a bit of a weep from this seal. Research indicates there's an o-ring that could be culpable too. Can this be done with tranny in bike? What is the general process for removing/replacing the seal? Is there an updated Viton seal?

Thanks,

Kristian

If I don't have time to reply in the next day or so nag me by PM. I'm super busy at the moment and don't have a lot of time for board stuff.

Pete is by far your best bet so PM him and get his opinion

I've never tried to replace it in situ, but I reckon it's feasible, you could probably get the rear nut off with a rattle gun, about the only easy way, and then fish out the speedo drive worm.

I have not heard of a Viton seal for the output, there is a Viton for the input. I don't think you need a Viton seal, temperature at the rear is not an issue.

Stroking my HUGE ego and being the self promoting, self publicist I am (because everybody else thinks I'm a donkey) here is a link to Guzzitech DK, now hosted on Gregg Bender's site and articles to shimming the box by Pete and a more general idoit's guide by me (It's an idiot's guide coz that's wot wrote it). If you've never ventured into the box it will give you an idea of what's in there. The box in the article was an LM 1000 but the 1100 is very similar (I've taken one of them apart too and although there are some differences that guide should still pretty much hold good)

Dunno if that is any help or not and excuse me if I am teaching "my granny how to suck eggs"

Pete, thanks-

John, I know of your terrific page, and have it printed in color in my Sport 1100 work binder; thanks for doing it, a fine resource.

Best,

Kristian

Lads,

Follow-up question: Is there more than one seal to order when replacing the output shaft seal? I heard something about an o-ring too.

Thanks-

It's in my guide around pages 45-47 there is a narrow washer and O ring that gets inserted onto the layshaft before installing the worm drive if that is what you are referring to. If I was going in that far I'd obviously replace that too for all the effort that's involved.

I'm assuming that you're going to remove the seal pull out the worm drive and then reinstall the seal, so you'd be as well replacing the O ring behind the worm drive too.

Depends how deep into the box you are going

Only one seal as far as I'm aware

Yep, went carefully through part of your excellent pictorial and Pete's too; very helpful! Am taking Pete's word to heart that the o-ring is a frequent actual offender for leaks.
