Removing/installing 27mm Output Shaft Nut with Rattlegun?
« on: November 01, 2018, 10:44:58 AM »
The estimable Mr. Noble's excellent 5-speed tranny rebuild guide advocates using a rattlegun for removing this big bastard of a nut, very smart; and also for reinstalling it. Does it matter that the required torque figure can't accurately be met when using a rattlegun to reinstall the nut as long as it is staked properly? Some of those guns really load up on torque. It would be difficult to hold the shaft while using a normal torque wrench, so I like the idea.

You're going to get different opinions on this one Kristian

I stole the idea from Pete and my 1000 box has been together now for 6 years plus admittedly with modest mileages.

I suppose it all depends how OCD you are, a rattle gun is a bit of a blunt instrument.

I tried going down the torque wrench route and eventually gave up saying "bugger it where's me rattle gun"

It's your bike and the gearbox guide is just that, if you don't like how I did it feel free to try something different, in an ideal world, with clamps workbenches and special tools, I'd use a torque wrench but I don't so I didn't

I do hope the guide was of some use & let's see what the experts say when they chime in

If it's good enough for you and Pete, it's good enough for me! Your guide is great, by the way--*really* helpful. It's why I'm going into this with total confidence, especially as the shop manual is so cursory. And, it saves me from buying the tools.

There are rattleguns and there are rattleguns! You're not going to use a 1" square drive, two hander connected to a factory sized CF/M tank are you?

Most home or workshop 1/2 inch guns running off a decent sized tank are up to the task. Basically if it's strong enough to break the stake it'll do it up again tight enough with just the mass of the output shaft as resistance. Make sure the threads are clean, add a bit of blue Loctite 243 on the final assembly and give it two or three quick buzzes before you stake it.

At the end of the day the nut is the sacrificial part. If you are so heavy handed you monster the threads, (I never have.) it's the nut that will fail first.

I've been rattling up both the input and output shaft nuts for best part of forty years. Only ones I've ever had problems with are ones that have been 'Shaved Aped' or given the green, 'You're never f#*%ing coming off again you bastard' Loctite treatment! Lucifer's hammer always fixes that but it can get messy!

Haha, no, just a 1/2"er! Thanks for the tip, as always.

I figured out a simple solution to holding the various bits
Had an old clutch plate which I strapped to one of the bell housing bolt holes under tension

I planned on pulling on the 12" wrench with a luggage scale
But of course I couldn't hold the box down.

So I bolted it to an 8 foot 8 x 2 and used a couple of adapters with a torque wrench.
Made it very easy to torque.

BTW the 32 mm 3/4 drive socket also fits over the long shaft on a VII crankshaft

My new California 1100 had a transmission case problem. I watched the shop work on it. They used a rattle gun. Years later, the nut popped off because the lay shaft threads were damaged. There were no layshaft replacements on the planet.

I have been in a number of transmissions since. It is not hard to torque it right. I admit that I usually rattle them off.

The trick is torquing in with the tranny in the bike.
